What got you here won't get you there.
The architecture worked.
The process worked.
The tool worked.
Then the constraints changed.
Four talks explore what happens when growth changes what "good" looks like.

To me, the whole idea of managing scope is antiquated and not particularly useful. It assumes a fixed up-front plan from which you can deviate. It assumes a schedule based on that up-front plan. However, scope defined upfront does not work, and it never has. The notion also assumes project thinking, where you estimate based on that up-front plan. To me, all of this is dysfunctional.
It's best to figure out what to do next by doing the current thing (and getting feedback). Talk to your customers to figure out where to start. Pick the smallest core of the core of the core idea and build that. Get feedback. Use that feedback to decide what to do next. Release immediately to get revenue sooner. There are no projects. There is no "scope" to creep. There's just a continuous stream of added value. Stop when there's nothing valuable to add.

Rule #1 of Software Architecture:
YOU ARE NOT NETFLIX!
If you don't have 270M users, a quarter of which can be on the system simultaneously, you don't need the complexity necessarily to support that. Build exactly as much architecture as you need. Build it so that it can grow incrementally. Do not future-proof.

A longtime friend, one of the most reliably excellent software engineers I know, just left AWS for Airbnb. His reason? Airbnb is remote-friendly, and AWS gave him an ultimatum to RTO.
RTO doesn’t filter out slackers, it just pushes away the people who have better options.

Bishop's Law: Any work done async requires a resync. The more work done async, the more complex the resync.
Why don't we write every program to run in asynchronous threads? Because most of the time the overhead of managing the thread pool and merging the threads, plus the potential issues with state changes causes deadlocks if not managed properly.
Why would writing code (which is an act of mutating state), be any different?
You may get more volume of total lines of code done while people are coding, but the splitting and merging of the work will slow you down in the end.

We talked about augmenting your platform with AI, rather than using AI as a selling point of your platform.
You don't always need a chatbot, your users don't need to know it's AI, and your users likely want to do the things they did before with fewer steps.
