In August 2021 an RSPCA (England & Wales) Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) attended the Chigwell home of violent criminal Phil Ali to investigate a dog beating complaint. Concerned after seeing treadmills and scarring on the dogs’ faces, the ARO alerted the charity's Special Operations Unit - a taskforce which investigates serious and organised animal crime, including dog fighting.
RSPCA officers would soon uncover an underground UK dog fighting gang operating on a global scale 🌎
Pictured are most of those convicted: ringleader Phil Ali aka 'Dr Death', fight referee Billy Leadley alongside wife Amy Leadley from Takeley, Bishops Stortford (many of the fights were hosted at their home and 16 'fighting' dogs were seized from them), and another key player Stephen Brown from Chigwell. Four of their many innocent canine victims are also shown.

Please retweet, CONVICTED | Laurance Silver, 48, from #Killinghall, #Harrogate #Yorkshire #UK – left an injured and starving dog to “suffer for weeks”
- avoids jail‼️‼️
The RSPCA was alerted to the plight of two-year-old bull terrier crossbreed Esther by a member of the public. It was found that her owner, Laurance Silver, hadn’t fed her properly and had also failed to seek veterinary treatment for a suspicious injury to one of her hind legs.
Silver told RSPCA Inspector Emma Stainthorpe that he and the dog had both fallen down the stairs three days prior and Esther had been limping ever since but he thought she was getting better.
In her written statement to the court the inspector said: “Mr Silver brought a tri-coloured bull terrier cross named Esther through to the passageway. She was very thin. I could clearly see her spine, ribs and pelvic bones and she was holding up her rear left leg."
Esther was taken straight to a local veterinary practice by the inspector. The court was told she passed faeces containing pieces of material on the way there.
In her evidence to the court the vet said: “Esther was severely underweight with a body condition score of one out of nine.
“Her ribs, spine and pelvic bones were visible and she had minimal muscle mass. She was moderately lame on her left hind limb but was weight bearing.
“To reach this low body condition score she had likely been deprived of adequate food over a long period of time or the underlying cause of her poor condition not investigated and addressed by a veterinary surgeon.
“This level of emaciation from a normal body condition would take at least three weeks if food was completely withheld. In this case, the period of suffering is likely to be much longer if Esther was given some food, but not sufficient food, to meet her nutritional requirements.”
In court, Silver pleaded guilty to one Animal Welfare Act offence following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA.
A deprivation order was also made by the court in respect of Esther who remains in RSPCA care and is recovering.
Sentencing | 12-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, costs of £400 and £154 victim surcharge. Banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

Please retweet, CONVICTED | Shauna Donnelly, 62, from #Byker, Newcastle upon Type NE6 – turned a blind eye to the suffering of her elderly pet dog #UK-
AVOIDS JAIL‼️ - RIP Molly 🐶🌈💔
Police officers visiting Shauna Donnelly’s hone on an unrelated matter found the elderly dog, Molly, locked in a bedroom with no food or water. She was in pain, emaciated, diseased and lying on a urine-soaked bed.
Molly was removed from the house and found to be lame in one of her front legs, her nails were so long they were curled into her paw pad and she was flea-ridden. She was completely emaciated with her ribs and spine protruding from her frame and also had infected cataracts.
She was immediately put to sleep to end her pain and suffering.
An experienced dog handler said it was one of the worst cases he has ever seen, but the court heard that Donnelly showed little concern for the dog.
In court, Donnelly pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
Recorder Christopher Rose told her: “It’s quite apparent Molly was subjected to significant neglect for well over two years before the police attended. When they attended they found Molly to be in considerable pain, distress, clearly diseased and the description given is she was completely emaciated and suffering cataracts that were infected.
“In short, she had been wholly neglected and allowed and allowed to get into a dreadful and distressing state.”
Sentencing | four-month custodial suspended for 12 months. Banned from keeping animals for ten years.

Please retweet, CONVICTED | Stephanie Murphy, 35, from West #Derby, #Liverpool #L12 #UK – left her family dog to starve to death in a filthy, abandoned house, turning a blind eye to the dying dog's suffering on return visits - AVOIDS JAIL‼️‼️
The female boxer-type dog, Cassie (pictured), was found dead at the abandoned home of mother-of-two Stephanie Murphy on September 20 2023.
Prosecutor Tara Thomas told the court: “At approximately 2pm, a call was made to police by staff from the defendant’s children’s school, raising concerns for their safety as they hadn’t attended school for two days.
“Police attended and found the deceased dog in the hallway. No persons were located inside. The deceased dog was located; he was extremely thin and was not breathing.”
She said a post-mortem revealed the dog had been starved to death. An attending police officer said the house was “in bad upkeep” and no food had been left out for the dog, and his dog bowl was empty.
In a police interview, Murphy stated that she did not intend to cause harm to the dog. When asked if she knew the dog would die when she abandoned him, she said: “Yes, but it wasn’t intentional. It wasn’t on purpose”.
Ms Thomas said the boxer had endured “prolonged suffering which had resulted in death”, and that the offence was aggravated by the fact that Murphy had returned to the house “and despite seeing the (dog’s) condition, the dog was still left and was not fed”.
Georgia Maudsley, defending, told the court her client had “suffered a mental breakdown [and] bereavements in her family, her relationship broke down. She felt fearful to be in her own home and fled to her mother’s address, and her mother did not want the dog in her home.
“Her poor mental health at the time has clearly impacted her thinking skills. She states she was simply existing at the time and not thinking due to her poor mental health. The home was very unkempt and unclean and it shows how her mental state was at the time.”
Murphy pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.
Judge Paul Healey said: “It must have taken days, weeks, for the dog to become emaciated and eventually die. The dog died as a result of the neglect caused by you. It went on for a period of weeks where you could have taken action to alleviate the suffering of the dog, but you chose not to.
“Sadly you have lost family members, your relationship had come to an end, and the events of your personal life led to you losing the ability to live life as you normally would do and provide for the dog’s needs.
“I accept at the time you were suffering from your mental health, but I struggle to understand why that prevented you from simply picking up a phone to get some help. You had every opportunity to speak to the RSPCA or somebody to say you were struggling to look after the dog, but you didn’t do so.”
Sentencing | 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months; 80 hours of unpaid work.
Banned from owning animals for just six years‼️

CONVICTED | Paige Laverty, 19, from #Illingworth, #Halifax HX2 – for cruelty to a young dog found in a collapsed state with visible bones and skin covered in sores.
Laverty turned a blind eye to the appalling suffering of her one-year-old Staffy cross, named Rocco. The puppy was found with multiple open wounds and urine burns where he had been “left to lie in his own mess for days” and had been starved to emaciation. Sadly, he was too unwell to be saved and was put to sleep by vets.
The court heard that RSPCA Animal Rescue Officers Emmeline Myall and Jade Barber went to Laverty’s address in August 2024 after a report of concern was made by a member of the public.
ARO Barber said: “His ribs, spine and hip bones were clearly prominent. His skull was clearly visible which showed significant muscle wastage.”
She said Rocco had discharge coming from his eyes and did not have the strength to lift his head. His fur was wet and there was a strong smell of ammonia.
They took him to a vet but in the consultation room, he “just groaned” as they tried to assess his condition.
ARO Barber said they also offered him a dog treat but said: “He didn’t even have the energy to open his mouth fully to take the treat so he quickly gave up trying.”
The vet’s statement said Rocco was suffering from muscle loss, urine scalding, dehydration, low temperature and an inability to move.
“The animal was visibly suffering so the decision was made to euthanise the animal,” said the vet.
In court, Laverty admitted causing Rocco unnecessary suffering by failing to provide nutrition and investigate his weight loss.
Her lawyer excused his client’s cruelty on the grounds that she was “young” and said the neglect was “not intentional”.
Sentencing | 20-week jail term , suspended for 18 months; 250 hours of unpaid work; £400 costs and £187 victim surcharge. Banned from keeping all animals for 10 years ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
