Delivered firestarter remarks on Primary Plastic Polymers at the 5th Ministerial meeting of the @HACplastic.
I highlighted the importance of ensuring that there are provisions to include the marine environment, including areas beyond national jurisdiction, when talking about plastic pollution as this is a crucial area for SIDS like the Maldives.
In my statement, I further emphasised that SIDS contribute minimally to global plastic production and the need for further discussions on how SIDS may be disproportionately affected by some of the potential obligations and approaches currently being discussed.
As Maldives joins the ‘Bridge to Busan’ declaration, we remain committed to our global ambition to end plastic pollution by 2040.
