The AI boom must not fuel a new wave of #PFAS pollution! As chemical companies expand production to meet demand from #DataCentres, we urgently need transparency, safer alternatives and strong restrictions #GFC IC-1 theguardian.com/environment/…

Regulating chemicals in groups helps avoid regrettable substitution and contributes to better protection of health and the environment #PlasticsTreaty @brsmeas @GenderChemicals #PlasticChemicals
🚨“BPA-free” doesn’t necessarily mean bisphenol-free. As concerns have risen over BPA (bisphenol A) in packaging, manufacturers have replaced it with related chemicals like BPS and BPF. These chemical cousins raise similar health concerns. ⚠️ Yet products labeled “BPA-free” can lead consumers to assume they’re safer. 🧪There are thousands of chemicals used in plastics. Instead of swapping one concerning chemical for another, researchers recommend regulating chemicals in groups to prevent harmful substitutions and better protect human health. 🍽️ Toxic chemicals in plastic food packaging are a major concern because they can leach directly into the food we eat. 📣Sign the petition to tell lawmakers to get plastics off our food! bit.ly/noplasticpackaging-ac… #PlasticPollutes #BreakFreeFromPlastic #FoodSafety #Tox

1/ Plastic pollution doesn’t affect everyone equally. In Brazil, the Instituto de Direito Coletivo (IDC) sees it as a matter of social justice: recycling cooperatives carry much of the cost of a system built on endless waste.

These are just a few of the studies from this year showing how plastic is harming our health. The science continues to mount, but we already have more than enough evidence of plastic's harms to take action now. Ask your elected official: What are you doing about the plastic health crisis? Will you support legislation, like New York’s Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, to reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals in plastics? It’s time to take on Big Plastic and their kissing cousins in the petrochemical industries. Tag an elected official who needs to hear this below ⬇️ #plastic #microplastics #health

The little recycling arrows did a lot of that work. The OECD's Global Plastics Outlook put global plastic recycling at about 9%. The rest gets landfilled, burned, or leaks into the environment. Buying less single-use stuff does more than sorting it better.

An important grassroots advocacy training for those who want to educate communities about toxic chemicals in plastics #plasticsTreaty #PSIDSPlastics @BANToxics @CEJADKenya @groundWorkSA @CeciliaSBianco
Plastic is made with toxic chemicals and fossil fuels, and its production contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Tackling plastic pollution is part of addressing the climate crisis. But understanding the problem is only the beginning. We need people who can work on public policy, educate their communities, and push for solutions. Our free, two-hour Beyond Plastics Grassroots Advocacy Training will help you build those skills, identify opportunities to make a difference in your community, and connect with a growing national movement for change. Join us November 7, or 10, or 12. Register: beyondplastics.org/trainings Let's turn concern about plastic pollution into collective action. #ClimateAction #BeyondPlastics #EndPlasticPollution

We know that microplastics are harming our bodies, but what’s been less clear is exactly how that’s happening. A major new study from scientists at @Columbia provides insight into how: the combination of microplastics and water create highly reactive chemicals. Reports @shannonosaka for @washingtonpost, “These chemicals, known as reactive oxygen species, are known to contribute to heart disease, cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s.” Plastics are a public health crisis. We need our elected officials and government regulators to take action, now. #plastic #microplastics #health

Will this wake us up? On a remote island off of Australia, scientists are finding seabirds with nearly 900 pieces of plastic in their stomachs. These plastic pieces are shifting their internal organs within their bodies, and starving them to death. Fiji is building a national plastics inventory to guide policy. But Pacific islands cannot solve a global crisis alone. We need a binding #PlasticsTreaty tackling the full plastics lifecycle, including production and toxic chemicals sdg.iisd.org/commentary/gues… #PlasticFreePSIDS
