This is very interesting on the politics of housing.
There are few housing policies that are retail politics but Haringey's successful upwards extensions policy is one!
Haringey introduced a rule for a small area of the borough that allows residents to add 1.5 storeys onto their home. For the many families who did it, it means an extra 3 bedrooms and bathroom!
The uptake has been phenomenal - one count puts it at a 60% adoption in the small collection of streets that are allowed.
Now, Hackney is also working on a similar scheme but residents want the policy to be done at a quicker pace. An extra few bedrooms is transformative for living standards if you're overcrowded.
The last I heard local politicians have spotted the opportunity and are speaking to various community leaders about their support...

Working hard to keep (proportionately very modest) 18-storey towers out of an area adjacent to possibly the world's densest employment hub sounds spectacularly bonkers to me.
This is a very good argument against Conservation Areas in high demand locations.

Officer recommendation rejected 5 votes to 2. However legal advice says councillors cannot approve, so the decision is deferred pending further documents. Worried the chair might beat up some of the other councillors for that.

Would you say a 9,054-page planning application for an office block and some flats is:
A) Too long
B) About right
C) Not long enough
If you answered C, congratulations! You could work at Hackney Council.
