It's sad to see a country as big as Brazil reach the point where the main opposition candidate leaves days after the presidential election fearing arrest and has to face its unjust courts.
His father survived a stabbing in 2018 and is now serving 27 years in prison. The same Supreme Court justice keeps going after the whole family: he barred Flávio from visiting his father during the campaign, ordered his brother's arrest weeks before the runoff, and is now taking his passport.
Many Brazilians are asking whether their justice system is independent or political.

BREAKING: Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro steps off a private jet in Miami after President Trump approved his entry into the United States despite a court order banning him from leaving his home country.
Bolsonaro reportedly used an Italian passport to cross into Argentina with his family before boarding a private plane that stopped in Ecuador on its way to Florida.
The Trump administration confirmed it is granting visas to Bolsonaro and his family, just days after his election defeat.

بيان الخارجية السورية يناقض نفسه: يستنكر العمل الأردني ويعتبره "انتهاكاً للسيادة"، ثم يختم بالدعاء لـ"الشعبين الشقيقين". فهل الأردن شقيق أم معتدٍ؟
لو قامت إسرائيل بالعمل نفسه لسمّاه البيان "عدواناً" وسمّاها "العدو الإسرائيلي". أما الأردن فقد تحرّك لحماية أمنه بعد مجزرة استهدفت كنيسة وقتلت مصلّين أبرياء. والأخوّة الحقيقية تكون بملاحقة القتلة، لا بإصدار بيانات الاستنكار.
المشكلة في النظام السوري أن معظم القيادات في الحكم ذات خلفيات تكفيرية جهادية، فمن الطبيعي أن تتحول سوريا إلى ملاذ لهذه الجماعات بدل أن تكون شريكاً في محاربتها.
وما لم يُبعَد هؤلاء ويُستبدلوا بقيادات سورية معتدلة تمثل كل المكونات والأديان والإثنيات، ستبقى سوريا عبئاً على دول الجوار، وستصبح أفغانستان المنطقة !

Israel ambassador to France said he wishes to become the "first Israeli ambassador in Beirut."
Many Israeli diplomats were about to be appointed as ambassadors to Lebanon between 1983 and 1985. But the growing peace agreement signed on May 17, 1983, was destroyed by Baathists, Hezbollah, and Salafi jihadists. A signed document cannot bring peace as long as the forces of jihadism are able to destroy diplomatic achievements in weeks.
To have mutually appointed ambasaadors between Lebanon and Israel, Hezbollah and the jihadists militias should have been removed first.

منذ سنة 1969 تأسست منظمة التعاون الإسلامي @OIC_OCI وتضم 57 دولة، وكان هدفها ترتيب البيت العربي والإسلامي سياسياً واقتصادياً، لكن ماذا قدّمت فعلاً حتى اليوم؟
ومؤخرًا أُنشئ اتفاق مكة (الدفاعي)، ومن الواضح أنه ستنضم إليه دول عديدة، ولكن ما أهدافه الرئيسية؟

حين يقول إن الأميركيين ينسحبون والإسرائيليين يملأون الفراغ، فهو يكرّر الخطاب نفسه الذي استخدمه طوال عقود لتبرير الوصاية السورية أولاً، ثم النفوذ الإيراني لاحقاً. وحين يدّعي أن نزع سلاح حزب الله لا يتم إلا بالحوار معه وبموافقة طهران، فهو يعترف ضمناً أن القرار ليس لبنانياً، لكنه يرفض الاعتراف بأن هذا الواقع هو نتيجة عقود من سياساته هو وشركائه.
التطبيع مع إسرائيل ليس «خيانة» كما يروّج الإقطاعيون والمليشيات. التطبيع يفتح آلاف الوظائف أمام اللبنانيين، ينزع فتيل صراع الإسلام السياسي المسلح، ويعطي الشعب اللبناني فرصة حقيقية للعيش بدل أن يبقى رهينة زعماء الطوائف والسلاح. والأهم من ذلك أنه يضرب في الصميم منظومة الإقطاع السياسي التي يمثلها جنبلاط نفسه، تلك المنظومة التي عاشت عقوداً على السمسرة والصفقات والحروب بالوكالة.
من يرفض التشدد في ملف السلاح غير الشرعي خوفاً من «حرب أهلية»، هو في الحقيقة يخاف من سقوط سلطته. ومن يدعو إلى الحوار مع من يحتكر السلاح ويقرّر الحرب والسلم من طهران، ليس داعية سلام، بل داعية استمرار الحالة اللبنانية المزرية. لبنان لا يحتاج إلى المزيد من «الحوارات» التي يحميها السلاح غير الشرعي، بل يحتاج إلى دولة واحدة تحتكر السلاح، وإلى اقتصاد مفتوح، وإلى قطع الطريق على من حوّلوا الطائفة إلى إقطاع والسلاح إلى مصدر نفوذ.
وليد جنبلاط ليس جزءاً من الحل. هو جزء أصيل من المشكلة.

It is ironic @ColdBrief you value Syria's pluralism, yet you see an opening in Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former jihadist commander.
Under his rule, government-aligned forces massacred Alawite civilians on the coast and carried out executions of Druze in Sweida, as UN investigators documented. Christians were bombed inside their own church in Damascus on his watch.
His constitutional declaration makes Islamic jurisprudence the main source of law. That is not pluralism.
Blaming Israel for Islamist schoolbooks gets it backwards; that's a choice made in Damascus.
Meanwhile Netanyahu has led Israel through repeated wars that left Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran's proxies far weaker, and he keeps winning free elections.
Wanting an elected leader jailed while giving a jihadist the benefit of the doubt isn't pragmatism. It's a double standard and dangerous !
In a few days, Israelis finally go to the polls. I hope Netanyahu loses - and eventually ends up behind bars, where he belongs!
This election matters for Syria, too!
I have always seen Syria’s pluralism as a strength. It is not Saudi Arabia, nor should it try to become a nation defined by a single religious identity. Syria is home to Muslims, Christians, Druze, Alawites, Kurds, Arabs and many others. Its diversity is part of what makes it Syria.
But lately, I see Syria drifting in the wrong direction. Not simply towards Islam, but towards Islamism - an ideological project that risks turning religious identity into a tool for political control.
Look at the schoolbooks. There are troubling signs of increasingly anti-Israel content and Islamist ideological influence, in many respects even worse than under Assad!
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has made substantial efforts to remove antisemitic material from its school curriculum. That deserves recognition.
But we must also understand the context.
Netanyahu’s policies, Israel’s military operations and its continued presence in Syrian territory since December 2024 have fuelled anger, frustration and resentment. That does not justify Islamist indoctrination, but pretending Israel’s actions have no consequences is equally dishonest.
This vicious cycle can be broken.
Gadi Eisenkot offers a potentially different approach. He is no dove on security, but he has argued for turning military strength into diplomatic gains rather than pursuing prolonged territorial expansion and permanent buffer zones deep inside Syria.
That creates an opening for something better: security arrangements, deterrence and negotiations instead of an endless cycle of occupation, humiliation and radicalisation!
I want to see a Syria that embraces its pluralism rather than abandons it. And I want to see an Israel that understands the difference between defending its security and pursuing policies that create the next generation of enemies!
Netanyahu’s defeat would not solve everything. Eisenkot’s election is not guaranteed, and a change of government would not magically transform Israeli policy.
But it could open a door.
The Middle East needs fewer ideological crusades, less territorial ambition and more pragmatic leadership. Syria and Israel both have something to gain from that.
Ambassador Barrack @USAMBTurkiye has criticism for nearly everyone in the Middle East, except Sharaa's government. Yet Syria's new school curriculum is pushing children toward religious radicalism.
