EXC: Inside Andy Burnham’s strategy to reverse Brexit 💫 “He thinks the right thing to do is go back to the European Union. Whether that’s doable or not is another question. But I think the prevailing wind is with us so let’s see how far we can push the envelope,” an ally said 💫Burnham sees it as both an economic boon and a vote winner 💫Burnham’s overtures to the EU have been described by European diplomats variously as “a love letter,” “courageous,” a “bunch of flowers” and “divorcees getting back together”. 💫There is a sense of rewarding good behaviour from previously recalcitrant, sulky Brits. “We are now very keen to make the summit a success,” one European diplomat said of the Nov 20 meeting. 💫 Concerns grow over EU plans to delay a decision on tuition fees beyond the summit: "they could zing us afterwards" 💫Post-summit Burnham speech planned to set out next steps on Europe, designed to dovetail with the 10-year-plan 💫Former Cabinet minister warns Burnham EU will only take the UK seriously about re-joining after a referendum, not if measures are only in Labour's manifesto 💫 Concerns the EU could apply a rejoining levy on the UK as payment for messing them about 💫Cabinet dismay at re-opening debate 💫BUT @robfordmancs says there is danger in being overly frightened of a debate on rejoining. 💫“Brexit is like a pufferfish in a David Attenborough nature documentary.  It puffs itself up to appear more frightening than it is. The Leave-supporting media the inflation mechanism: any mention of it and they freak out and shout betrayal. But Labour MPs and Cabinet ministers who take the pufferfish seriously are in danger of giving it more credibility than it deserves,” he said. Read the full piece here: inews.co.uk/news/politics/bu…

Exclusive: Schools will be forced to cut special needs support staff in order to fund a share of the teacher’s pay rise, teachers have warned. The i Paper has spoken to multiple headteachers and school leaders who say that despite suggestions the pay rise is “fully funded” at a “national level”, many schools will still face a shortfall and will need to find cash afford the 3.5 per cent pay award. With finances already stretched, SEND staff will feel the brunt of cost-cutting which is likely to result, they argue. It comes as local authorities are being driven into a projected deficit of £10.4bn by 2028 over the size of the bill for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) as more children need support – 1.8 million children in England have special educational needs, a rise of 91,400 (5.2 per cent) since 2025. NEW: NHS pay rises above 2.4 per cent could hit patient care, ministers have warned, prompting a furious response from the union representing thousands of health service workers. The Government says its financial plans for 2027–28 can accommodate a 2.4 per cent pay uplift without trade-offs against its main health commitments. But it warns that a higher award would “inevitably” affect healthcare delivery. Every extra half a percentage point on NHS pay would cost around £750 million, according to evidence published by the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England on Monday. The department says that is equivalent to more than 89,000 hip or knee replacement operations. UNISON branded the proposed rise “derisory”, warning that NHS workers would be angry at an increase it says falls well short of expected inflation. Story 👇 inews.co.uk/news/politics/uk…

Exclusive: The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says he is opposed to plans to lower the mansion tax threshold to properties worth over £1.5m - a move that would bring many more properties in the capital into its sights. The measure, already dubbed a “mansion tax”, is due to come into force in 2028 at the £2m threshold. The reported proposal to reduce that threshold to £1.5m would substantially widen its reach, with analysis suggesting that the overwhelming majority of the additional properties affected would be in London and the south-east. For Khan, that raises a fundamental question about what constitutes wealth in a city where property prices have long outstripped those elsewhere in Britain. “I’m against this government or any government… incurring attacks on people who may be asset rich but cash poor,” he says. “The cost of homes in London has gone up over the last period. So somebody who may live in a property that on the face of it is worth £1.5m, it’s not as wealthy as some people may be led to believe.” He adds: “There’s a perception that… the streets of London are paved with gold. Now, people may be living in properties for a variety of reasons that on the face of it may be worth a lot of money, but it’s not true to say these people are wealthy.” Story 👇
