The word means unbeliever sure, but the muslim slavers in east Africa used it mainly in relation to sub-saharan Africans (the people they enslaved). The Portuguese picked it up from them and then taught it to the Dutch in SA. They are the originators of that word and its use to label us. Read up on the Indian Ocean slave trade. The Christians took the west and the Muslims took the east. Both philosophically justified because we did not share their religiouns.
ndumiso dladla's tidbit about racism as not just institutional power, but also discursive power is beyond useful if you're a sometime althusserian in your political-theoretical inclinations.
there's something almost cybernetic about john coltrane's pyrotechnic attempts at sound layering, or what they call his "sheets of sound": a kind of scalar perfection that almost hints towards a virtuality of sorts (in the deleuzian sense)

that's not a bad thing, so long as you can justify what makes it so great. teaches you awareness and being in the zone, for later when you can reflect on it critically and (perhaps?) objectively.

October 2022; we took uMakhulu to Cape Town, for a weekend tour, then… Young Gilson Amaral was on Alto Sax…He understood the assignment !! What a great talent he is ❤️
A special mention to Mark Fransman, who was part of the band and happens to be one of my favourite musician.
