it is a HOBBY. ffs. you're supposed to get enjoyment from the hobby. creating is supposed to make you happy. fanfiction is not an industry; it does not need to be 'sustainable.'

This ao3 discourse is really highlighting to me that a lot of people genuinely believe “you will create and get nothing and be happy” is a sustainable model for fanfiction.

I think either way after ao3 is back up, if you’re uncomfortable with ppl distributing credited pdfs of your fics everywhere, you genuinely need to stop uploading on ao3 like deadass

I think people are too used to every pose being opinion based. When I defend the fact ao3 has rpf underage content, I don’t personally like or consume that content at all !!!! I do however think objectively it makes sense since that content is not illegal under US law -

Jesus Christ you people can’t handle anything anymore. Get over yourselves. The whole reason this downloading thing IS okay is because we as authors are giving this free content as a gift, and should NOT be expecting anything in return!!!

I really don’t understand the issue #some writers have with redistribution from ao3. It’s an archive, are you posting there with the sole intent of getting engagement? I derive enjoyment from the thought of people enjoying my work whether it’s redistributed or on the og site-

I’m sorry but acting like people are stealing from you for downloading fics are insane. If you’re a real fanfic writer, you’re in it for the love of the game and you’re not policing how people are enjoying your writing. If you’re in it for the kudos, this isn’t the hobby for you.
