Over the weekend, I was at Jubilee Church (RCCG) Manchester where I engaged with young business professionals about making a career pivot. The session was based on my personal experience of making a pivot from Academia to Management Consulting in 2023. Many professionals stay stuck in careers they have outgrown or fed up with because they believe changing direction means abandoning everything they have built. The truth is the opposite. Your experience, skills, knowledge, relationships, and achievements are transferable assets. The key is to identify where they create value in a new industry or role. Before making a career pivot, take time to: • Assess your strengths and skill gaps • Understand industry trends and opportunities • Learn the skills employers are actively seeking • Invest in continuous learning and networking • Position your personal brand through your CV and LinkedIn profile • Apply confidently knowing your prior successes matter I ended the session by reminding the audience that career pivots can be uncomfortable, but they require courage, preparation, and persistence. They can also unlock opportunities, growth or a higher salary, and greater impact and fulfilment. PS: The most successful career transitions happen when preparation meets opportunity. Moniepoint (@moniepoint) just did something that I think is first of its kind. You can now invest in the Dangote Refinery IPO by literally walking up to a Moniepoint POS agent. You do not need an app or a trading portal. Your everyday POS agent, the same one you use for withdrawals and transfers. I've talked about how weak retail participation is in Nigeria's capital market, and how SEC and NGX have pushed campaign after campaign trying to get ordinary Nigerians to see the stock market as something that belongs to them too. But policy intention and actual behaviour change are two different things, and that gap has always been the hardest part to close. This might be the most practical attempt I've seen yet at closing it. Someone who has never opened a trading account in their life can now participate the same way they'd buy a recharge card, from the Moniepoint app or from any of their POS agents nationwide. That's a significant shift! Worth saying clearly though, an investment is still an investment. Share prices move up and down, so read the offer document, understand what you're putting your money into, and only invest what you're comfortable with.
