I’m 40. I’ve been gaming for a long time, and I’ve had my share of “this looks amazing” followed by “well, that was disappointing.” Getting me hyped takes a bit more these days. I watched both Silent Whisper trailers and tried to go in with an open mind. But honestly? They feel pretty generic to me. They’re clearly going for visual appeal, but I’m not really getting a sense of the story or what would make me interested in this world. And the characters still look uncanny to me. Could the game have an amazing story? Sure. Could it turn out to be really good? Also sure. We don’t know yet. I’m judging what these trailers have shown me, and so far, I’m not sold. We’ve had enough impressive trailers, big promises and disappointing releases over the past few years that I’m more cautious now, regardless of where a developer or publisher is from. I usually wait for release, look at reviews and gameplay, and then decide. Yes, people have told me LaDS started with similar trailers. I wasn’t playing back then. I probably would have said “okay, let’s see what it’s like when it’s out” about that too. If you’re excited, good! Enjoy it. I’m not going to insult you for liking a game. I’d just like that same courtesy extended to people enjoying other games, too. Anyway, the faces. I wanted to figure out what was bothering me, because “uncanny” can be frustratingly hard to explain. Something looks human, but there’s this little feeling that something is off. You might not immediately know why. Even if all the individual features look fine, a small detail or the way they fit together can still give you that feeling. At first, I thought it was the big eyes. So I grabbed a Loomis reference from the internet and put it over the image. No, I didn’t draw the guide myself. I was lazy and wanted to check something quickly xD Loomis is basically a method artists use to construct a head and work out facial proportions. It’s a reference, not a rule every character has to follow. The overlay is rough, but looking at the lower jawline, you can see how the shape differs from the guide. The way the face tapers towards the chin seems to be more of what bothers me than the eyes themselves. Could that be the art style? Absolutely. And you can like it! For me, that face shape combined with the more realistic rendering just feels off. The overlay helped me put a finger on why. It doesn’t prove the design is objectively wrong. The eyes feels off too, but here I can't put my finger on it why. But can we also please stop treating every criticism as hate? Saying “this looks uncanny to me” isn’t insulting the fans or attacking the artists. I’m explaining why a design doesn’t work for me. You don’t have to agree. So yeah. Maybe I’ll check it out when there’s a release date and more to go on. Right now, I don’t feel the need to rewatch the trailers ten times or dig into every detail. They haven’t hooked me, and I have other games to play.
