NEW: A historic number of recent NFL games are being won in the final minutes. The reasons why trace to special teams: Kickoff rules and kicking evolutions have perhaps changed football forever. Kyle Shanahan: ā€œYou can lose with 7 seconds on the clock.ā€ espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/5013…

You’re joking, right? You didn’t know Chris Ballard was stubborn about signing free agents? Are you new here? We grilled him about free agency for 10 years. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Replying to @HolderStephen
I can't believe this is surfacing AFTER THE FACT. Good reporting would've unearthed this and would have EXPOSED this years ago (as fact, not as an opinion). Why are you only relatively certain? This reflects poorly on the reporter asking questions.

Common misperception. All we can do is ask the questions. And we did. Over and over and over. People with critical thinking skills understand that. Yelling at someone doesn’t produce better answers.

Judging by interactions here, I'm gathering people locally believe that if the local media members aren't coming to every press conference with the anger and demeanor of a New York talk radio caller, you're being "soft."

Also, Ballard answered the questions in great detail. He wasn’t dodging us. We had hour long press conferences sometimes. People just disagreed with his answers. There’s a lot of selective memory going on here.

Colts guard Quenton Nelson, asked about remaining in Indy long term (he’s in the final year of his deal and could be a trade target of other teams).

I don’t think there’s that much to tell. He was relatively an open book. He told you where he stood on most things, even if fans disagreed. He was actually really transparent by comparison to most of his peers.
Replying to @HolderStephen
Do you think we’ll start hearing more stories about Ballard’s time in Indy now that he’s gone?

One flaw Chris Ballard has always had is being stubborn about giving his coaches what they want. I am relatively certain Shane Steichen wanted to do more at WR, but Ballard didn’t. Perhaps also at DE. It ends up reflecting poorly on the coach. And makes evaluating him harder.
NEW: I don’t *think* head coach Shane Steichen will survive the Colts’ organizational shakeup, but I also believe assuming he won’t is naive. Odds are high he’ll be a head coach in 2027. Will it be in Indy? Stay tuned: espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/5022…

This is long-term issue. I actually told Frank Reich after he was fired that I felt he should have been bolder about fighting for what he wanted/needed. I thought he was too willing to roll with the punches. Ultimately, he paid the price.

Also: I wanna be clear. This wasn’t a case of the GM and coach being at odds in either case. Not at all. It was more a philosophical difference (wanting to develop unproven players vs bringing in proven talent).

No, that would be a mistake. Only scenario I’d find acceptable would involve the new GM also wanting to keep him.
Replying to @HolderStephen
So now a new gm will be forced to keep Shane? We've been through this before with Pagano and set the team back another year. This job is already hard enough to sell as is

The Colts signed veteran WR Mecole Hardman Jr. and punter Thomas Morstead to the practice squad. Hardman presumably will compete for playing time with a thin WR room. Morstead is insurance given the injury to punter Rigoberto Sanchez.

ā€œI'm not firing you now but I WILL fire you…if you don't get it together in 2026.ā€ ā€œā€¦and then I just think the scene on Sunday in that stadium was SO ugly.ā€ @HolderStephen on the Colts’ decision to fire GM Chris Ballard:

Interesting perspective. I think a couple things: 1) people underestimate what Carlie can glean from listening to communications during games. It is super revealing 2) many fans who were mad about her not firing them after ā€˜25 doubted if she had the nerve. I’d say she does
As Carlie Irsay-Gordon made the decision to retain the HC and move on from the GM, it is likely she used what she heard on the headset during games to help make that determination. My understanding is that Steichen has very good command during games. Having the owner on the headset helps him. I think every ownership group and GM should be listening live during games, or at least recording the audio for later review. If the head coach or another staff member objects, that should be a major red flag. When owners aren’t listening, it limits their ability to make the best possible decisions for their organization. It can become a highly political situation, with various parties trying to spin things when the owner starts asking questions. Two of my experiences highlight these issues. In one, ownership and the GM did not know who was actually calling the offensive plays. In another, the HC removed a front office staff member from the headset because of significant issues with that staff member’s performance and behavior. That removal never seemed to make it to the owner. Understanding why it happened would have helped the owner make better decisions.

Shane Steichen on Chris Ballard’s dismissal: ā€œIt’s the shitty part of the business. I don’t think it falls completely on Chris. I’m the head football coach. It takes all of us: Coaches, scouts, everybody.ā€

My advice: Listen to Chap. Also, we did this whole routine a few years ago. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this rumor. And last time, it was just that: a rumor.
I've listened to the @dpshow snippet about the Colts and Peyton Manning. I don't question Dan's source at all. I will say this, according to my source, the Colts HAVE NOT reached out to Peyton at this point. That's not to say they won't.

Tangential to the topic at hand, but nothing shows the contrast of 2025 Daniel Jones vs 2026 Daniel Jones more than this: 2025: 68% completion rate, career high 2026: 59.6% completion rate, career low

He's not responding to pressure well and seems like he isn't able to drive the ball on intermediate throws as well as he did last season (injury related?). He's just not the same guy. He's not the only reason they're 2-4, but it's not getting better.
