Excellent insight from @PaulRabil about using OTT streaming (and a calculated bet with major media) to win a rights deal for PLL.
Would guess that even if it didn't work out as as it did - PLL would be in a good spot owning data. Via @HowieLongShort and @JaneWallStreet.

.@PaulRabil and @GanunLester surfaced a range of actionable insights, including how challenger leagues can use their first media deal to build a case for the next one and why pro leagues are best positioned to rebuild rec sports on the latest episode of @JaneWallStreet 👇

An overlooked part of the story is that Paul was an OG content creator who recognized that he could use that platform to build businesses (an entirely new lacrosse league).
So ahead of the times and also why PLL is a blueprint for so many succeeding emerging leagues.
He says in this interview that he literally announced the launch of the @PremierLacrosse League on his @YouTube channel!!
PLL (@PremierLacrosse) Board Member David O'Connor told @PaulRabil and brother @MichaelRabil in the early days of the PLL that " the most difficult thing to do in the business of professional sports is get a media rights deal."
Before the PLL landed its media rights deal with @espn, its partnership with @NBCSports Gold gave fans a dedicated streaming platform where they could subscribe specifically to PLL content.
@PaulRabil explains to @GanunLester how that siloed model gave the league valuable first-party audience data, helping it better understand its fans when negotiating its eventual deal with @espn.

The College-in-3 trend is accelerating. Early movers experimenting with a 3 year bachelor’s degree were less selective schools like Merrimack or Weber State. Then states like OH, OK, and KS told their flagship universities to pilot the 90 credit degree. Now even NYU is doing it.

Rights owners seeking to reduce dependence on media rights revenue would be wise to invest in infrastructure that allows for a single fan profile across every touchpoint.
Having it enables the organization to develop a more complete understanding of who their fans are, how they engage and ultimately spend.

“One login. Every fan, every door. Tickets, [team] app, [within a] mixed-use [district, at] concession [stands etc].
If you can have one profile that works not only in your walls but those that are associated with you, that's going to [be] the easiest way for everyone to be able to access the data, drive incremental spend, and create an ecosystem effect,” @shrip1220 tells @HowieLongShort.

Every week, we get so many of these comments from people while we’re in or around Tucson. And it’s always the same answer: there’s no question Arizona deserves our boys. They saw greatness in them when nobody else did.
I mean, Coach Gonzales came to one spring practice when Dash was at Santa Margarita and wanted to offer him. He offered him in Week 3 of his junior year. Then he had to defend it constantly and still didn’t care. Coach Bringuel called him every damn night until the day he showed up on campus.
At Dash’s official visit, we talked NIL money. I had told Dash he wasn’t getting any because he was staying with Noah and had no expenses. I had told Ben T. to use it on our receivers. But in the meeting, Ben told Dash he was getting the NIL package that he and the staff knew Dash was going to deserve.
That makes Arizona more than deserving to me. Our family will forever be indebted to Arizona for the love and commitment they show our boys.
Just proving people right and watching as God continues to write this story. 🥤➡️🐻⬇️
Arizona doesn't deserve Noah and Dash. Thank you @lesfifita and @mrsFeef for all your family has done for the University of Arizona. 🐻⬇️
