The £20k ISA allowance is seriously underrated.
If you max it every year and average 7%:
5 years: ~£115k
10 years: ~£276k
20 years: ~£820k
30 years: ~£1.9m
Over 30 years, you’ve put in £600k.
The rest is growth.
And because it’s inside an ISA, your investment gains are tax-free.

If you’re more than 20 years away from retirement, a market crash is one of the best things that can happen to your portfolio.

If you’re 18-35 in the UK, this is honestly the order I’d focus on your money:
1) Pension first: Get your full employer match. It’s basically free money, so you may as well take it.
2) Emergency fund: Get yourself a few months of expenses sitting in cash. Keep it somewhere easy to access and leave it alone unless you actually need it.
3) Stocks & Shares ISA: Once the above is sorted, start investing. A simple global index fund will go a long way.
That’s it.
Get the basics right, keep doing it consistently and give it time.
Most people in their 20s aren’t doing all three. Starting early puts you miles ahead.
