ALT Synchrotron microCT volume of a pseudotachylyte (PST) vein and its immediate damage zone. Red are segmented garnets; blue are pores. Porosity is concentrated in the PST vein, in particular around garnets (single grain & framboidal varieties). Porosity in the vein was formed during the recrystallization of the vein, when garnet grew at the expense of the PST matrix. The density contrasts between garnet and the matrix created a net negative volume change - i.e. porosity. In the damage zone, porosity formed during the initial rupture propagation is locally preserved due to local inefficient healing of the fractures.
