We need more senior human rights practitioners to raise serious concerns about the appointment of the UN Secretary-General. Respect for human rights must never be compromised for political gain.
It would be shameful if UK prime minister Andy Burnham endorses United Arab Emirates diplomat Lana Nusseibeh to be UN secretary general: 1. She has been a lead apologist for the UAE while it sent arms and mercenaries to the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary as it committed genocide in Sudan. 2. Burnham's effort to make amends to the UAE is no excuse. The Emirati owners of Manchester City football club have received multiple citations for cheating. That misconduct is NOT a reason to support Nusseibeh's whitewashing of the UAE role in genocide. 3. Britain supposedly was going to get tough on Israel for its settler violence and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, not to mention its genocide in Gaza. The UAE has ignored all that and stuck with Israel regardless of its criminality. Would Britain really now reward the UAE by supporting its diplomat? middleeasteye.net/news/uk-le…

United Arab Emirates diplomat Lana Nusseibeh's support for Gaza after Israel's genocide doesn't absolve her for denying the UAE role in sending arms and mercenaries to the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary in Sudan as they committed another genocide. No one who thinks some genocides are ok should be UN secretary general. theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

“We will not forget this conflict and we will act.” Yet you’re backing the candidate of the very country arming those committing war crimes in Sudan. Stop gaslighting the nation, @Ed_Miliband.
The world cannot ignore what is happening in Sudan. One year on from the mass atrocities in El Fasher, the UK is sanctioning those linked to these and other atrocities, and strengthening support for survivors and communities at risk of famine.

This article raises serious questions about the SG candidate, Lana Nusseibeh. As human rights activists and in solidarity with the Sudanese victims and survivors, we have to consider these claims about her support for RSF.
Emirati sponsorship of Manchester City is nothing in the effort to whitewash UAE sending arms and mercenaries to the genocidal Rapid Support Forces paramilitary in Sudan compared to the appointment of lead apologist Lana Nusseibeh as UN secretary general. trib.al/mV7SMIW

Taliban human rights abuses track record is clear but I didn’t know international community will also make a track record of their unprincipled engagement. The UK representative even does not mention women and girls in his post. This is beyond betrayal and disappointment!
Just back from Kabul where I met Ministers, NGOs and civil society organisations. I encouraged steps to build regional stability, tackle terrorism and uphold the rights of women and girls. And highlighted the very significant contribution made by 🇬🇧 to support Afghan people.

The more you've engaged with them, the worse things have gotten for the people of Afghanistan. The regime wants all of your engagement and none of the accountability. This is a losing strategy.

Secretary Rubio called Amnesty International a fraud instead of answering a question about U.S. strikes. The great irony of Secretary Rubio’s attack on Amnesty is that he’s leading U.S. attempts to destroy the international justice system. We call his bluff. Read our new blog: bit.ly/4802bfe

Afghan suffering raised billions. To this today, we still have people making money in the name of Afghan misery and suffering and showing next to zero accountability and transparency for it. I think it is time we changed that and understood how much money they've made in the name of Afghans and how much of it actually reaches Afghans. Team at @kabulinstitute is working on something that translates along these lines. More on this.
This is highly distressing and troubling. It is an embarrassment for both the unaccountable aid orgs and recipients who are accused (needs adjudication) of irregularities, waste or embezzlement, and the donors who do not take the time or put in the effort to enforce accountability and thorough auditing. To defend the most vulnerable, to increase funding via non-profits, NGOs and charity orgs registered inside and outside Afghanistan that claim to help the poorest or most needy, or a segment of society (like girls’ education or mine victims rehab etc), it’s time for donors and investors to impose strict rules that would not only prevent impunity and such corrupt practices, but also initiate a thorough investigation into these allegations to prosecute those found guilty of misappropriation and abuse. Failing to do so would violate established rules and hurt those who depend on assistance via NGOs and non profits. We need to avoid a repeat of the same scenarios experienced under corrupt regimes and institutions lacking oversight. The net result at the very least is loss of credibility, trust and accountability.

This is what Afghan women need. Commitment & contribution making a direct difference in a woman’s life. Another step by @sbasijrasikh that history will remember forever. Thank you for your tireless efforts.
Today, in conjunction with the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Trust, a partner organization of the University of Oxford, I am proud to announce that I am making a gift of $2.5 million to endow a scholarship that will allow at least one Afghan woman to pursue her master’s degree at Oxford every year. The scholarship, which I’ve chosen to name the Afghan Women Leaders Fund, will provide 100% of the course fees for an eligible master’s degree along with an annual stipend to cover food and accommodation costs as well as a grant to offset certain student expenses. In addition, scholarship recipients will undertake an extensive leadership training program delivered by the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Trust. I myself am an alum of the Weidenfeld-Hoffman Scholarships and Leadership Program at Oxford, and it is my privilege to make this gift to honor the resilience and bravery of Afghan women. The scholarship will be available for students applying to join Oxford in September 2027, and full details are available by following the link below. tinyurl.com/bdasct8p I want to be clear that this gift does not come from SOLA, and it is independent of the funds we raise there to support our operations. In the spring of 2024, I was one of 12 individuals provided with $20 million by the philanthropist Melinda French Gates to launch our own philanthropic giving. I am endlessly grateful to Melinda and her team at Pivotal Ventures for their trust and belief in my vision of the world-changing power of a generation of educated Afghan women. I’m fully aware of the visa brake currently in effect in the UK, and this gift is in no way meant to be a political statement, nor should it be interpreted as one. I intend this gift to offer opportunity and possibilities for women whose bravery is the light in the darkness, both now and in years to come. At SOLA, we educate more than 40,000 students between our boarding school in Rwanda and our online program SOLAx. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we are not satisfied. The need is immense. The work is generational. A few years ago at the UN, I asked: “What is one girl worth? She’s worth everything – and she can do anything.” I am so happy to be in a position today where I can make a financial gift that places the tools of success in the hands of deserving Afghan women. This is all we’ve ever asked: not to be pitied or patronized, but only to have access to the tools we need to build our own futures, our own successes. At Oxford next fall, an Afghan woman leader’s journey will begin. Another Afghan woman will come the following year, and it will continue, year after year, woman after woman. I am eager to see the future each one of them will build.

Peaceful protesters must be able to demand accountability from those in power without facing intimidation, arbitrary detention, or sweeping restrictions on their freedoms. Demonstrations should not depend on obtaining prior permission from the police. At most, organizers may be expected to notify the authorities of their plans.
