Podcast 'reviews' are so often either blurb or shameless PR. If you've a good critical ear and a yen to analyse audio works in depth, RDR wants your input! 👇
RadioDoc Review is open for submissions of reviews of narrative non-fiction radio and podcasts. If you've heard something interesting, write about it for us! It can be long or short, in any language (but reviews are in English) ro.uow.edu.au/rdr/policies.h…

Two years of reporting, months of writing, and seasons of rewriting. Long form is like climbing a steep muddy hill in flip flops. Still, I count myself among the lucky ones who do it. Thanks to @believermag for running "The Recollector," my latest, about a museum and a stone.

Ready for a real reencounter with my dear colleagues, the literary journalists-cronistas scholars across the globe @IALJS today in Sydney #IALJS-18 Conference @Macquarie_Uni @UniSouthWales
Immersive stories of rural Chinese women, Black Humanities in South Africa, the largely invisible work of women journalists in Brazil and the fascinating concept of Taidan-Bon, a sort of Japanese dialogue-based book. (Would make a great podcast form!) great start #ialjs
‘My elders speak 3-8 languages…but I have not heard them described as polyglots. I hear them described as illiterate.’ Profound, insightful keynote from Dr Debra Dank #IALJS #litjournalism Slide compares the multiplicity of Indigenous languages in Australia with Europe.
More great snaps from last weeks International Association of Literary Journalism Studies #IALJS conference #18 in stunning #Sydney Australia:

My contribution @IALJS: Exploring Narrative Podcasts as Digital Literary Journalism, and a Masterclass on The Making of The Greatest Menace, our multi-awardwinning podcast about a 'gay prison' in Australia. Plus a hard sell of my book 😄 #IALJS #litjournalism #audiostorytelling
Fab week of literary journalism conference @IALJS. Sydney Harbour stealing the show as usual - our banquet on board as Vivid Festival lit up the Opera House. Diverse topics from Writing Climate Breakdown to LGBT Cronicas under Pinochet to whether The Wire is LJ. A: No!
Excited to hop a ferry on Sydney Harbour to the start of the International Literary Journalism Studies Conference @IALJS @Macquarie_Uni & meet global scholars. I’ll be presenting on Narrative Podcasts as Digital Literary Journalism. #IALJS #litjournalism
Fab prez @IALJS conference Sydney on ‘features of gonzo poetics’ in Literary Journalism by Polish scholar #JanMiklas-Frankowski. I can map 6 of the 7 to exemplary narrative podcasts 👌 Just not sure if/how the ‘intoxication’ factor may have played out 😄 #litjournalism
Bon voyage!
Starting my longest journey ever! from pole to pole, from harbor to harbor, #IALJS-18 Sydney @Macquarie_Uni @IALJS here I go!

After weeks of tensions, pro-Palestine student protest organisers announced a partial victory last night & signalled they would pack up and go home. But not until @UniMelb confirms the claimed deal. @jamscosta & Citizen team report: thecitizen.org.au/articles/d…
When you go DEEP in an interview, especially with an ‘ordinary’ (or as the great Studs Terkel called them, ‘uncelebrated’) person: just being listened to with sincere interest and curiosity can bring forth remarkable and extraordinary stories. More in ep! podcasts.apple.com/au/podcas…

ALT This might seem strange, even inflated… but it’s what happens when you go DEEP in an interview. Especially with an ‘ordinary’ (or as the great Studs Terkel called them, ‘uncelebrated’) person. Just being avidly listened to, with sincere interest and curiosity, can bring forth remarkable and extraordinary stories (it's so draining, I call it 'aerobic listening'). Of course this intimacy can be misused – but in longform oral history/audio settings, we’re generally an honourable bunch. This ep includes a raw clip I recorded decades ago with an Australian woman who was a journalist in Vietnam during the war - still brings me to tears.
