ANNOUNCEMENT: After 5 years of building community, training organizers, and raising hell for the rich and powerful, Iowa Student Action is shutting down.
Like many people right now, our organizers are moving into new stages and ways of life. [1/5]
A few key lessons:
Organize everywhere! Always bring a friend (or 3)
Share your story. Listen to others’
Get uncomfortable
HAVE FUN
When in doubt, ask “Why?”
Everyday we choose the world we want to live in. Choose love over fear.
Until we meet again ❤️ [5/5]
If you are a student or young person looking to take action, start now, where you are. What matters to you? To your friends, classmates, and coworkers? Start talking to each other. [4/5]
If you were ever a part of our work – for a year or a moment – THANK YOU. You made the dream come true. [3/5]
Iowa Student Action was a vehicle for change; a political home for young people in extremely isolating times; a first step for lifelong organizers and leaders; and an inspiration for everyone who came to our direct actions, spoke up, and took back some power in their lives. [2/5]

After the students left, Barker showed up, looking pissed as hell. He and his neighbor angrily put the signs away, complained to me about “harassment,” and turned to walk away behind his house the second I started to film.

Yesterday students/grad students with @IAStudentAction and @cogsunion marched to David Barkers house in Iowa City. Barker owns over 2k apartments that he collects free money from. He gave 63k of it to Repub Gov Kim Reynolds, who then appointed him to Iowa Board Of Regents.

One union nurse said the reality of support for UIHC nurses had its limits during the pandemic: “You know, calling us heroes and putting signs up that's nice but it would be nice to be compensated a little bit for all the extra time and effort.” – at Iowa City, IA

Hi folks!
Here at Old Cap where
Iowa Student Action, Sunrise Movement, Iowa Freedom Riders and COGS (the Campaign to Organize Graduate Students) are saying “bye, bye” to Bruce Harreld, the outgoing UI president. Come say hi.
David Barker gave Kim Reynolds $63,000 and Reynolds gave him a seat on the Board of Regents.
Too bad money can’t buy the courage to face the students who made you rich.
Replying to @IAStudentAction
David Barker is too cowardly to face us, so we’re leaving our messages for him:
FREEZE TUITION
COPS OFF CAMPUS
$15 MIN WAGE
CARBON NEUTRAL CAMPUS

We’re outside waiting for David Barker! Waiting for him to read our demands and listen to students! #defundUIPD #tuitionfreeze
The president isn’t here but David Barker is and we’re on our way to his house.
Barker is a board of regents member and real estate developer. Coincidence? I think not
Dulce, an Iowa City student and local talked about their family’s ties to the university. Gentrification hurts the local Iowa City community! The reagents and president don’t care about the community. The IC community deserves higher wages and affordable housing.
Abinadi brought us together to share what makes us powerful. “We are more powerful all together than any of these rich white people”
