The real engine of the system isn’t the curriculum. It’s the sensei, a teacher respected as a mentor and a model.
Long before the modern system existed, temple schools (terakoya) were teaching ordinary children to read across Japan.
The word that explains it all: kyōiku. Ky (教) is “teaching,” iku (育) is “raising.” In Japan, school shapes character, not just test scores.
