On the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, we paid our heartfelt tributes to the maestro at Rajiv Bhawan, remembering his immortal creations and his unparalleled contribution to art, culture and humanity.

The government's reckless decisions regarding the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project and the proposed mega dam on the Siang River pose a serious threat to the entire state of Assam. In its bid to protect the interests of big corporates and business houses, the government has disregarded expert reports and fundamental safety norms.
If water from China's proposed 60,000 MW dam comes downstream, our capacity to withstand a project of just 11,000 MW will never be enough to protect us from the potential consequences.
On behalf of the Congress party, I strongly demand that all dam construction activities be halted until proper public hearings are conducted and adequate safety measures are put in place.
Our fight to protect the interests of the people of Assam will continue.

The devastating man-made floods of July 19 were entirely the result of the government's gross negligence and failure to act.
Even today, the affected families have not received adequate rehabilitation or compensation. We have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the Gauhati High Court seeking justice for the victims. Despite receiving notice from the Court, the government has failed to provide a satisfactory response and has repeatedly sought more time.
A majority of the affected families are yet to receive even the relief assistance announced by the Chief Minister. No provision has been made to compensate the business establishments that suffered losses either.
We will continue to raise our voice against this grave failure of disaster management and demand accountability from the government. We have always stood with the people in their fight for justice, and we will continue to do so.
