The Autumn Budget is just around the corner, and the government faces a crucial challenge: delivering fiscal stability while improving living standards.
With energy bills set to rise further, the chancellor must give households some much-needed breathing room. Freezing fuel duty would be a welcome first step, but further action is needed to ease the pressure on household finances, such as unfreezing the Local Housing Allowance and introducing rent controls to limit unaffordable increases.
Fiscal responsibility must also go hand in hand with economic growth. With the right safeguards, investing in the industries of the future can boost productivity and deliver lasting improvements in living standards.
And to help fund these priorities, the Budget must reform our tax system. That means taxing banks' windfall profits, ensuring that large online retailers pay a fairer share to fund cuts to high street business rates and giving local leaders greater control over tax revenues to drive growth.

Are you a northerner? Are you wondering what'll be in tomorrow's budget? Are you currently scrolling on X?
If you answered yes to any of those questions you should probably watch this and hear about what northerners (and everyone else) can expect to hear from the Chancellor👇

In my latest opinion piece for @themjcouk I set out our IPPR North calls ahead of Budget. Handily summarised by the headline “Budget 2026: IPPR North calls for regional growth and cost-of-living action”👇

Great to see MPs calling for key economic briefs to be held by No10 North in Manchester. The status quo of Whitehall driven regional policy carries more risk.
Great to see plans confirmed for a new station in Bradford to better link up this brilliant region!
Northern Powerhouse Rail is about connecting the vibrant people and places across the North to bring more jobs, housing, opportunity.

The closer we are to NPR being fully realised, the closer we are to the real economic growth that a joined up North can bring for the entire country.
Because people in Bradford and across the country cannot rely on old crumbling infrastructure anymore.
The North is home to 16 million people with an economy bigger than Norway or Austria - it’s only natural our mayors are out there selling it to the world together!
We're sick and tired of hearing how much "potential" there is in the North. It's not potential - it's REAL!

This here is devolution: Labour and Reform mayors working together, standing side by side representing the North 💪
They know their communities best, they know how to secure the deals that people would actually feel in their jobs, their wages, their high streets.

Great to speak to Naga & Charlie on BBC Breakfast this morning about @MartinSLewis’s new Small Ideas Initiative. Small ideas can make big improvements to our lives, show government at all levels listens & build trust that politics can deliver. Fab idea!
NEWS: Today I’m launching The Small Ideas Initiative. We want you to submit ideas at Small-Ideas.org for non-controversial fixes, e.g “live sewage updates for beaches” or “standardised allergen menus”.
A year ago, an interviewer asked what I’d have told the Government if I’d been advising it, I replied, 'Come up with 100 small things that piss people off and fix one a day for the first 100 days'. As I left the stage, I emailed myself, 'set up Small ideas institute!'
And today, I’m excited it's happening. I’m funding two charities to work together to collate the submissions, narrow them down to about 200 doables then turn those into formal policy proposals which I'll bring back to you for feedback.
Then to finish we've a Cross-Party panel who’ve agreed to pick 50ish, after which we’ll start trying to make them happen. You can read far more about it and who the cross party panel are here… blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2…
🏘️High streets are more than just places to shop: they’re spaces to bump into people, grab a pint, use the library.
As we moved shopping online, our town centres – and therefore our communities – have taken the brunt, with empty boarded up lots slowly killing that local buzz...
Here’s how we can start levelling the playing field for high street businesses. 👇

Always dangerous to be so relaxed whilst speaking to a journalist.. Great to speak with @bbcnickrobinson for @BBCr4today on how the PM’s clarity of focus helps delivery across Whitehall.
