I presented my HiTOP clinical utility article at @ISSPD1 today. Predicting treatment outcomes is one important dimension of clinical utility—but another equally crucial dimension is user acceptability. By user acceptability I mean usability and resonance across all stakeholders: researchers, clinicians, clients, and the people who support them. With the inclusion of lived experience speakers and panels, @ISSPD1 is setting a strong example of what it means to treat clinical utility as something that must be grounded in the realities of the people we aim to serve. It’s a reminder that diagnostic frameworks are not just scientific tools—they’re frameworks that shape how people understand themselves and their care.

#ISSPDStudentSection Mental health stigma can have many faces, from criticism to inappropriate beliefs about people suffering from mental conditions. Speaking freely under a clinical evaluation strengthens the diagnosis, but beyond there is a person who needs understanding.
