Following on from the #ThamesBarrier Annual Test Closure last month, the other Barriers in the @ISTORMnetwork are carrying out theirs, including the Rampsol Barrier in Holland It consists of three, 80m long inflatable bellows that protects the Hinterland nitter.gq/RWS_MN/status/15771993…

The team are now on site and will be carrying out their checks before the first gates start to move at, or shortly after 09.45 this morning. Another team are off to #Barking to operate the Barrier on the tidal River Roding. We are not closing the #Dartford Creek Barrier today.

The #ThamesBarrier Annual Test Closure takes place tomorrow. It will be a VERY RARE ‘reverse head’ closure - more of what that means tomorrow. Current estimated timings: 09.45 - 12.00 - Gates closing 13.45 - High tide 20.00 - Low tide 00.15 - 00.45 - Gates reopening

Back at the Maeslant Barrier near Rotterdam with @ISTORMnetwork to see how @Rijkswaterstaat undertake their maintenance activities out of the storm season. An amazing structure which closes a 360m channel to protect the hinterland against Storm Surges. 25 years old this year!

We’ve been busy on site today with our @EnvAgencyMids Lincs and Northants Flood Incident Duty Officers. They’ve been getting acquainted with the #BostonBarrier and control building, helping them to visualise our procedures should we need to operate in a tidal flood scenario.

The #ThamesBarrier is operating today for a scheduled low water test closure from 09.45 - 12.15. Our smaller barriers at Barking and Dartford will also be closing this morning. This is our monthly opportunity to check everything is in good order and to keep up staff training.

The primary #BostonBarrier gate is being tested today using the mains hydraulic power unit. This lifts the the barrier into defence position in around 20 mins. If you’re in Boston you can see the movement from the viewing platform outside Black Sluice Pumping Station.

#OnThisDay: in 1953, a large storm surge combined with a spring tide and flooded many parts of the east coast, claiming the lives of 307 people in England and 19 in Scotland. Central #London was only spared due to the major flooding in East Anglia, Essex and Canvey Island.

Vanavond sluiten we de #HollandscheIJsselkering vanwege de verwachte hoge waterstand. Rond 20.30 u starten we de sluitingsprocedure. Even later drukken we ook op de knop voor het sluiten van de #Haringvlietsluizen. Morgenochtend (vroeg) verwachten we beide weer te openen.

🚧⛔The #ThamesBarrier is closing this morning⛔🚧 We are closing from around 08.30 - 15.30 today due to a forecast tidal surge as a result of #StormCorrie. Our barriers at Barking and Dartford, and floodgates around the Royal Docks will also be closing today.

Various #carbon savings have been made on the project including the reuse of dredged materials for capping a local landfill site which avoided the need for over 30,000 lorry movements. #NetZero
