When thousands of crores are allegedly lost through financial frauds and accused flee the country, ordinary taxpayers are left to bear the consequences. Yet, a profitable public-sector bank IDBI Bank is being considered for sale to private investors. Bank reportedly generates around ₹10,000 crore in annual profit, why should its future earnings and strategic control be handed to private interests instead of strengthening public banking? Public-sector banks are more than profit-making businesses. They support farmers, small businesses, ordinary depositors and financial inclusion. Their value must be measured not just in profits, but in the public service they provide. Instead of selling profitable public assets, the government should improve accountability, prevent financial fraud and ensure that the benefits of public wealth reach the people. Public assets belong to the people.
