The voice note crisis
The worst thing about working in the Jewish community is the sheer number of WhatsApp voice notes I have to listen to. Be polite, take time to write.

When the four great kings of the east and the west came upon you to wage war with Abraham, what did you do? Eliezer said to him: The Holy One, Blessed be He, brought Abraham and placed him to His right, and we would throw dust and it became swords, and we threw straw and it became arrows. Sanhedrin 108b

Rabbi Yitzḥak said: This is analogous to one who was passing from place to place, and saw a palace aglow He said: ‘Is it possible that this building has no one in charge of it?’ The owner of the building looked out at him and said: ‘I am the owner of the building.’ So too, Abraham our patriarch was saying: ‘Is it possible that this world is without someone in charge?’ The Holy One blessed be He looked at him and said to him: ‘I am the owner of the world.’ Bereshit Rabbah 39:1

Remember Liel and Yanai Hetzroni 12-year-old twins from Kibbutz Be’eri, born on April 6, 2011. They were raised with tremendous love by their family Liel was energetic, creative and outgoing. She loved singing, dancing, drawing, cooking and baking, and dreamed of becoming a singer, pastry chef or cosmetician. Yanai was sensitive, funny and athletic, with a love of tennis, soccer and basketball. His teachers remembered him as a natural leader and a friend who made everyone around him laugh. On October 7, 2023, Liel, Yanai and Ayala were taken hostage inside Kibbutz Be’eri and held for hours in the home of Pessi Cohen. All three were killed during the attack, as was their grandfather, Avia. The twins were only months away from celebrating their Bar and Bat Mitzvah year. May Liel and Yanai’s memories be a blessing.

Remember Omri Ram (עמרי רם) 10/7 28 years old, from Aseret, born on April 8, 1995. He served as a combat soldier in an elite Military Intelligence unit and later earned a degree in economics and business administration from Reichman University. He loved surfing, skiing, tennis, frisbee, music and spending time with friends. His family remembered him as warm, generous and deeply caring, someone who naturally brought people together. On October 7, 2023, Omri attended the Nova music festival with his childhood friends Zur Saidi and Aviad Halevi. As they tried to escape, Omri and Aviad were wounded by gunfire, but the three continued trying to flee together. Contact with them was eventually lost, and all three were later found murdered near their vehicle. May his memory be a blessing

"The son of George Washington Hitler"
Dr. Gay Ludwig Hitler (1882–1948), an Ohio dentist and the son of George Washington Hitler... Dr. Gay Ludwig Hitler was born on January 13, 1882, in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio, to George Washington Hitler and Ida May Lutz. He worked as a dentist in Circleville, Ohio, for over four decades (practicing from 1922 through 1946). . . . The Hitler family (originally descendants of George Hitler, who emigrated from Germany/Maryland to Ohio in the late 1700s) was a prominent, long-standing farming and pioneer family in Pickaway County. The family had been in America for generations. The first was George Hitler, a German immigrant born in 1763, who settled in Pennsylvania before moving his family to southern Ohio. Some roads in Pickaway County still carry the Hitler name today. Then, in the 1930s, a man with the same surname rose to power in Germany. By the time WWII ended, it had become the most infamous name in the world. Due to the family's deep local history long before the 20th-century German dictator rose to power, several local places—including Hitler Road, Hitler-Ludwig Road, Hitler Park, and the Hitler-Ludwig Cemetery—were named after them. Many Americans with the name changed it. Gay Hitler never did. He lived through WWII and passed away on October 27, 1948, in Worthington, Ohio. He was buried under a gravestone that still reads “HITLER.” His story went viral more than 70 years later, when an old newspaper clipping with his name began circulating online. Even his first name was a family tradition. It came from Susannah Gay, the wife of the original George Hitler who brought the family to America. #archaeohistories
