On 4 November, @DLCI_Kenya co-hosted the Policy Forum “Towards thriving, resilient and prosperous drylands in the Horn of Africa” with the International Livestock Research Institute (@ILRI ) and the Dryland Observatory (@jameel_observ). The forum brought together policy conversations on the issues shaping the future of the region’s drylands: the outlook for drylands, rangelands and pastoralists beyond the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) and global debates; institutionalising the capacities needed for prosperous and resilient drylands; achieving the right to food in the drylands; managing El Niño and who leads anticipatory and early action; and new models for investing in drylands. @DLCI_Kenya Head of Programmes @bilachj moderated the opening conversation on the outlook for drylands, rangelands and pastoralists in the Horn of Africa, while DLCI CEO Dr. @JMokku moderated the closing discussion on investing in drylands. The day ended with a look at an emerging research, learning and policy agenda for drylands and the announcement of the Dryland Observatory. Dryland communities’ priorities must remain in focus—in these conversations and in the decisions that follow. Connecting pastoralist experience with research, policy and investment is central to that. @IGAD_CPALD @PPGKenya @SwissDevCoop @IGADsecretariat @EdinburghUni @ProsperGlb_org @GALVmed @JMokku @HonAdanHaji @NanokEpuyoCBS

@DLCI_Kenya continues to support pastoralist communities in raising awareness of existing policies, services, and opportunities to strengthen their livelihoods. In Siana Ward, Narok County, we held dialogues with pastoralist communities on livestock health—including vaccination, feed and fodder, and the diseases affecting herds—access to reliable livestock health information, the pastoralist cooperative model, and opportunities to work with government entities to improve livestock service delivery. The dialogues were held across five locations: Nkineji, Olesere, Oloolaimutia, Talek, and Eldonyo-Narasha. In each, we convened separate sessions for women, youth, and elders, allowing every group to speak to its own priorities and giving us a fuller picture of how decisions about livestock health are made within households and across the community. Central to these discussions is the National Livestock Development and Promotion Service (NLDPS), established following resolutions of the 4th Pastoralist Leadership Summit. The service presents an important opportunity for pastoralist communities to access structured support for livestock health and production. These dialogues are undertaken in partnership with @ILRI , reflecting our shared commitment to improving pastoralist livelihoods and strengthening livestock health systems in Kenya’s drylands. @GALVmed @ILRI @jameel_observ @IGAD_CPALD @christensenfund @PPGKenya @SwissDevCoop

👨‍🏫 Training more people seemed like the answer. But training is hard to scale and even trained users still need expert support. What if that expertise was built directly into the model? 🤖 @BiovIntCIAT_eng @IFPRI @ILRI @WorldFishCenter @CGIAR_Data @CGIARPolicy

Livestock is more than animals—it is food security, jobs, livelihoods and economic sovereignty. At the 2026 APSK Scientific Symposium in Malindi @KilifiCountyGov, I was Honoured to officiate the opening ceremony, called for science, research and innovation to transform livestock production, strengthen food safety, empower farmers and pastoralists, and drive value addition. Our goal to move from raw commodity exports to high-value products, industrialisation and prosperity. Research must reach the farm, the factory and the market. Setting up relevant #clusters, centres of excellence, #grandchallenge Kenya use of emerging technologies like Artificial intelligence and precision livestock farming, Genomics, precision breeding and reproductive biotechnology and Novel feeds, feed biotechnology and precision nutrition. @nacosti @KENIAupdates @nrfkenya @pthigo @FAOLivestock @ILRI @kalromkulima @sri_kenya @Livestock_Dev @OfficePCS_KE @APSK_Kenya #Livestock #ScienceForDevelopment
