DLCI joined @MercyCorpsKe under the Regional Livestock Programme (RLP), alongside @SwissDevCoop, government officials, development partners and diverse actors for the validation workshop of the proposed Kenya Camel Centre of Excellence. Hon.Dr @HonAdanHaji , MP for Mandera West and thematic lead of the @PPGKenya Pastoralism and Livestock Committee, reaffirmed the importance of translating the 4th Pastoralist Leadership Summit (@PLSKenya) resolution into action. Adopted in Wajir in December 2024, the resolution recognised the need for a dedicated institution to coordinate camel research, innovation, skills development, investment and knowledge management. The proposed Centre could help boost productivity, expand market access, strengthen climate resilience and advance the role of camels in pastoralist livelihoods and national development. ๐ŸŒ Did you know? Eight African countries account for 79% of the global camel population. This presents a significant opportunity for Africa to lead in camel research and innovation. The message from the workshop was clear: moving from concept to implementation requires collective ownership, strong partnerships and sustained commitment.

Moyale Border Communities Need Protection, Not Escalation. In his latest article, @DLCI_Kenya CEO Dr. @JMokku calls for civilian protection, humanitarian support, responsible public communication, and peaceful dialogue amid the ongoing border conflict. His message is clear: protect every civilian, reject collective blame, and put peace before confrontation. ๐Ÿ“– Read the full article: dlci-hoa.org/moyale-border-cโ€ฆ @PPGKenya @NCIC_Kenya @StateHouseKenya @ASALs_Regional @SwissDevCoop @christensenfund @IGAD_CPAC @IGADsecretariat - @IGAD_CPALD @mpidokenya @NSCpeace @PLSKenya @KenyaGovernors

DLCI continues to support pastoralist communities in raising awareness of existing policies, services, and opportunities to strengthen their livelihoods. In Mara Ward, Narok County, we engaged pastoralist communities on livestock health, access to reliable livestock health information, the pastoralist cooperative model, and opportunities to work with government entities to improve livestock service delivery. Central to these engagements is the National Livestock Development and Promotion Service (NLDPS), established following resolutions of the 4th Pastoralist Leadership Summit. The service presents an important opportunity for pastoralist communities to access structured support across the livestock value chain. These engagements are undertaken in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), reflecting our shared commitment to improving pastoralist livelihoods and strengthening livestock value chains in Kenyaโ€™s drylands. #Pastoralism #LivestockDevelopment #Narok @christensenfund @SwissDevCoop @DrylandsASU @GALVmed @VeterinaryKenya @PLSKenya @PPGKenya @PNTVAfrica @FCDCKenya @JMokku

On 4 November, @DLCI_Kenya co-hosted the Policy Forum โ€œTowards thriving, resilient and prosperous drylands in the Horn of Africaโ€ with the International Livestock Research Institute (@ILRI ) and the Dryland Observatory (@jameel_observ). The forum brought together policy conversations on the issues shaping the future of the regionโ€™s drylands: the outlook for drylands, rangelands and pastoralists beyond the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) and global debates; institutionalising the capacities needed for prosperous and resilient drylands; achieving the right to food in the drylands; managing El Niรฑo and who leads anticipatory and early action; and new models for investing in drylands. @DLCI_Kenya Head of Programmes @bilachj moderated the opening conversation on the outlook for drylands, rangelands and pastoralists in the Horn of Africa, while DLCI CEO Dr. @JMokku moderated the closing discussion on investing in drylands. The day ended with a look at an emerging research, learning and policy agenda for drylands and the announcement of the Dryland Observatory. Dryland communitiesโ€™ priorities must remain in focusโ€”in these conversations and in the decisions that follow. Connecting pastoralist experience with research, policy and investment is central to that. @IGAD_CPALD @PPGKenya @SwissDevCoop @IGADsecretariat @EdinburghUni @ProsperGlb_org @GALVmed @JMokku @HonAdanHaji @NanokEpuyoCBS

Who speaks for your land? What does public participation mean?

Yes, Isiolo Governor deserves a fair hearing. But hiring goons to stifle due process is beneath any public office. It offends the dignity of leadership.
