These actors seem to be “China virus lab theory” conspiracists targeting scientists who’ve done work w Chinese labs. Pass this thread to your relevant colleagues. I’m terribly sorry that anyone would use my identity to go after you. The authorities are investigating. 4/4

My new piece in @NewYorker. We have untapped testing capacity and ability to grow it further. But we don’t have the systems to connect it to the need. Making that happen is feasible. And in some places I highlight, people are starting to do it. newyorker.com/science/medica…

Let's not forget about the moral bankruptcy that this ER and countless hospitals exhibit every day. They trade on the credibility, passion and talents of dedicated clinicians who usually have no clue how their patients are being abused.
Replying to @sarahkliff
You can actually see that really clearly in the story I wrote yesterday, about a woman who got a drive-through coronavirus test. She used her insurance, and they were billed $6,408. Her friend paid cash and was billed $199. nytimes.com/2020/06/29/upsho… (2/8)

It's an embarrassment that we don't have great caregiver support/compensation given we spend 2.5x most countries ostensibly on healthcare. Any humane hc system would properly pay for this. Instead we "rent" health plans from Wall Street (w/ carriers carrying/taking our cash)

I've seen studies in influenza mouse models and hep B in monkeys, but none in humans that prove initial viral load relates to severity of disease. Other docs, is there good evidence of this in humans in other infectious diseases? References, please.
If true (and I can think of some confounders so I'm not 100% confident) this seems quite important. The fatality rate wouldn't be ~constant across different places. It would be worse in places with severe outbreaks when people are exposed multiple times. nytimes.com/2020/04/27/opini…

Don't just do something! Stand there! A brilliant article on why we can't abandon the principles of science no matter how urgently our emotions are driving us to do just that.
A great thing about having been around for a while is reading the brilliant things that your teachers, mentors, colleagues, and former students write. This is a great one. Covid-19 — A Reminder to Reason | NEJM nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE…

Another pre-print, so take with salt grain. But sensitivity of currently commercially available Ab tests appears to stink across the board. Is the answer wider use of ELISA? medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Wonderful article about the importance of proving interventions actually work, and in meaningful ways.
Years ago, wrote a journal article about 2 medical world-views: 1: A give it a shot, worldview 2. RCTs first Especially timely in era of COVID19 experimental drugs drive.google.com/file/d/1KkM…

NEW: I dug into the concerns that ibuprofen makes coronavirus symptoms worse. In short, they're unfounded. And no, despite what you may have read this week, the World Health Organization is NOT warning people against taking ibuprofen. buzzfeednews.com/article/ste…

Very promising results but: 26 (- 3) in the Treatment vs 16 (- 5 negative) controls (needed 24 per arm); not randomized; relatively young (mean 45.1); unclear comorbidities, 6 patients only got Azithro & no mortality result. Need a pragmatic RCT looking at QTc & G6PD deficiency

Exactly Not really an RCT This is something that may be promising, and worthy of studying properly - not just implementing

We are ringing the alarm bell, folks. The US is 10-14 days behind Italy. We're not doing enough to change that trajectory. They had 368 deaths yesterday. For a nation of 60 million, it was enough to raise their all-cause mortality rate 20%. We can avoid that. #StayHome
