In 1952, an English teacher named Cecil Dormand secretly paid for a dirt-poor 11-year-old to take a drama course. He never told him and the boy didn’t find out until decades later. By then, he was a knight, that little boy’s name was Patrick Stewart. He was born into a poor family in Mirfield, a small mill town in Yorkshire and his father came home from World War II a violent man, and he was violent toward Patrick’s mother. Young Patrick learned exactly when to step between his father’s fist and his mother. An English teacher put a copy of Shakespeare in his hand and told him to get up and perform. He never stopped and left school at 15. By 19 he was completely bald... most agencies told him he'd never make it because of that. In 1987, the LA Times called him an “unknown British Shakespearean actor” when he was cast as Captain Picard. Then he became one of the most famous faces on Earth. You’ve probably heard that part. Here’s the part you haven’t: He spent decades as a patron of Refuge, sheltering women and children from domestic violence. But he never stopped trying to understand his father. He dug up a 1940 newspaper clipping that said his dad had come home with severe shell shock. He went to France and walked the ground where his father’s unit was pinned down under bombing for hours. He learned his father had PTSD, and nobody ever helped him. So Patrick became an ambassador for Combat Stress, a charity that helps veterans. In 2013, a young woman at a Texas convention told him she was a survivor of domestic violence. He asked, “My dear, are you okay?” Then he hopped off the stage, held her, and told her: “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” At Dragon Con, a Make-A-Wish girl dressed as Spock came to meet him. 2,000 people were waiting for him to speak... he sat down and talked with her for 15 minutes, making all of them wait. He told her that since they were friends now, whenever she saw him on screen she could wave and say, “Hello Patrick.” After 9/11, he felt helpless, so he brought his one-man A Christmas Carol back to Broadway for a full week of charity shows. He played every character himself and donated every cent. In 2019 he did it again, and every dollar went to feeding hungry New Yorkers. In 2017, he fostered a pit bull named Ginger, who had been rescued from a dogfighting ring. She was his first dog in more than 50 years. He couldn’t bring her home to England, so he found her a family. Then he kept fostering more. When he said he was done with Star Trek so many people told him the show had gotten them through the hardest times of their lives. So he wanted to see if Picard could do it one more time. Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick 🖖

This morning, shrapnel from an artillery shell landed near the tents of displaced families in Al-Mawasi, sparking a fire that burned the bodies of two little girls: Habiba Zanoun and Aysal Abu Subha. #WhatDidTheyDoToDeserveThis? 💔

Those moments when Israeli police officers pinned a Palestinian child to the ground and choked him no human being with a conscience can remain silent in the face of such brutality. Human dignity demands that we speak out. Silence is not an option.

_I am writing to you from Gaza._ My name is Abdullah Omar, and I live in Gaza. I am a human being, just like you. I am living through a catastrophe that no words can truly describe. Every day here is a struggle to survive. We wake up not knowing if we will be safe. We go to sleep to the sound of fear. There is no stable electricity, no clean water, no sense of security. Everything we once called a normal life has disappeared. We have lost homes. We have lost loved ones. We have lost our dreams. But the hardest part is seeing our children live through this reality. No child should grow up knowing only fear, hunger, and the sound of bombardment. They deserve to play, to learn, to dream of a future. I am not writing this out of pity. I am writing this because we are human beings, and we want the world to see us as human beings. We want to live. We want peace. We want our children to have a chance to live a life without trauma. All we are asking for is what every person on this earth asks for: safety, dignity, and peace. Please do not look away. Hear our voices. Remember that behind every news headline, there is a family, a child, a father, a mother, just trying to survive. _From Gaza, with hope that someone is listening._ *Yours sincerely,* *Abdullah Omar from Gaza*

HOW are all those UK politicians and mainstream media who rose themselves to a fury when it was rightly said that ‘Zionism is racism’ but who either support & enable or ignore & deny Israel’s war crimes, crimes against humanity and GENOCIDE? They will be held to account one day in this world and shall stay for eternity in Dante’s deepest circle of Hell alongside the most odious and repugnant scum of the earth, Holocaust enablers and DENIERS
Replying to @muhammadshehad2
The #Zionists in the world are celebrating. It's so outrageous that the rest of the world allows this abomination to go unpunished. It's all macabre, savage, and inhumane.

I have read an excellent book by Andreas Malm He has the kind of intellect & imagination that is much needed in this time of multiple crises and the widespread uselessness of UK elites. His presence would be CONDUCIVE TO THE PUBLIC GOOD Banning him is authoritarian and extraordinary Please speak up further @ggatehouse

There was a real danger that Andreas Malm might have expressed humanitarian sentiments supportive of the Palestinian people and might even have highlighted the plight of their continuing genocide. The U.K. supports Israel, not the Palestinian people.
