Hey maybe we should not let a foreign country have backdoor access to all our critical infrastructure and control systems? Maybe some critical infrastructure like power plants, oil refineries should not be connected to the internet and go back to reliance on personnel for security reasons? Maybe automation is not ideal for all aspects of a society?
I highly doubt any blackout happens. The powers that be would never sacrifice that much money, and us working for them for three days. Cost is very roughly $2β5 trillion (about 1.5β4% of annual global GDP), with a central estimate around $3 trillion. Global nominal GDP is projected around $128 trillion in 2026, so daily output is on the order of $350 billion. A complete shutdown of all activity for three days would imply roughly $1 trillion in lost output, but reality is more complex. You really think the cheap Robert Kraft types are gonna lose 5 trillion to just implement some nonsense they are going to implement anyways? These types are so cheap they go to rub and tug shops and get caught. What does 5 trillion buy them? The death count would be pretty high as well.
Tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand excess deaths worldwide is realistic for a pure three-day simultaneous global blackout. Short blackouts produce modest but measurable excess mortality, mainly from medical-equipment failures, accidents, carbon-monoxide poisoning, and temperature extremes.
Examples:
1. The 2003 Northeast blackout (roughly one day in New York City) was linked to about 90 excess deaths.
