"We estimate that Mr Trump’s policies will cost the poorest tenth of American households, with average income after taxes and transfers of around $37,000, almost 3% of their income. The richest tenth, with average after-tax incomes of nearly $500,000, will gain nearly 3% (see chart 1). Households in the middle, with average income of roughly $100,000, lose more than $400"

In the wake of unprecedented cuts in last year's Republican reconciliation law, SNAP participation & spending have been falling — and the decline is much deeper than the Congressional Budget Office initially projected. cbpp.org/blog/congress-must-…

This is huge. A just-released SEC filing makes an extraordinary revelation: Mark Zuckerberg is getting ready to pay California’s 5% billionaire wealth tax and has signed an agreement to remain in California for 8 years. We are witnessing a global turning point unfold before our eyes. 🧵

If Prop 40 passes, Zuckerberg alone would contribute more than $10 billion to health care and education in California. Add the $10 billion from Jensen Huang—who has said that he would be “perfectly fine” paying the billionaire tax —and we're already at $20 billion in guaranteed revenue. There is now very little doubt that the tax will raise around $100 billion from California’s roughly 250 billionaires.

This Hoover Institution study, which has fueled the deluge of ads (more than $200 million spent by billionaires so far) to defeat the California billionaire tax, is spectacularly misleading. Let me explain its crucial flaw. 🧵
California's Billionaire Tax Act would collect roughly $30 billion. Accounting for lost income taxes from departures, the mean Net Present Value is negative $39 billion, from Benjamin Jaros and Joshua Rauh nber.org/papers/w35899
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Zucman argues that the tax will raise his projected revenue because billionaires who leave CA after 1/1/26 will be taxed anyway. At least $542B of net worth (Page, Brin, Thiel) departed the state by 12/31/25. The entire thread is a misleading denial of this fact. ft.com/content/d66976… nytimes.com/2026/04/27/us/… forbes.com/sites/forbeswe…

Last year, Trump & 98% of elected GOP enacted the biggest Medicaid cuts in history, bigger even than Reagan's cuts. By 2034, 7.5 million people will lose their Medicaid because of it. Clinics are already closing & hospitals are already cutting services, citing BBB as a reason.

Inflation has nearly wiped out all wage gains since January 2025. That's how big of gamechanger the war in Iran has been on Americans' finances. Since January 2025: CPI Inflation has grown +5.4% Wages (average hourly earnings) +5.5% This is a very different picture from President Trump's first term when wages were up over 15%, well above about 8% inflation. It helps explain the frustration many households feel right now with the economy.

A sign that people are not being "lifted" off SNAP: they're showing up to wait in the hours-long line at the overwhelmed local food pantry.
Food pantry workers on the front lines of feeding their neighbors say they're facing unprecedented challenges after cuts by the Trump administration. Demand is surging, while the amount of food they're getting from the federal government has fallen. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/wes…

NEW: Americans in nearly every income group are paying more under President Trump's second term in 2026. The overall impact of inflationary policies, OBBBA's top-heavy tax cuts, and expiring health care tax credits have left savings only for the wealthiest Americans.

A one-time 5% wealth tax would bring Silicon Valley’s billionaires’ wealth back to where it was just 31 days ago, on September 7. When it was "just" 178% higher than on January 1, 2023. They’d rather let 3 million people lose their health insurance than let that happen.

Americans don't trust that the benefits of AI will be distributed. That's not a communications issue. It is a substantive issue. Americans hear tech optimists talk about utopia, but all Americans know is a country in which the super wealthy rig the system. A country that cuts the social safety net to cut taxes for the wealthy. One way for tech optimists to start earning some trust from Americans would be for those optimists to push -- in a real way -- for strengthening the U.S. social safety net.
In this interview I tried to argue that a post-scarcity society will benefit working people. It was largely a rhetorical failure. People don’t trust that the benefits will be distributed, and tech optimists have to fix this communications issue.

Will A.I. Make Your Brain Lazy? Here’s What the New Research Actually Shows. When people become accustomed to skipping the productive struggle of logical and analytical tasks and having the process automated by using AI, they are more likely to give up on hard questions that they could otherwise figure out. “Part of how A.I. is making us dumber,” says Dr. Adam Green, a cognitive neuroscientist at Georgetown University, is “undercutting the development of learning how to think in younger people that now have an alternative.” But students who usedA.I. more like a tutor, to explain complex concepts or clarify ideas, not only retain high test scores, but their essays were higher quality as well. So the key is using this technology is a more effective way. Sadly, this is not the default way students seem to be using it. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

the headline: unemployment ticked up 0.1 percentage point, to 4.2%. but last month, the Black unemployment rate shot up a full percentage point, to 7%. a reminder: topline economic indicators can obscure *very* different experiences of the economy.
U.S. employers added 29,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2 percent. Data: bls.gov/news.release/empsit.… Full coverage: nytimes.com/live/2026/10/02/…

AI requires a redesign and expansion of core safety net programs -- including Unemployment Insurance, SNAP, Medicaid. The first thing political leaders should do is stop cutting these programs. Then, build on top of the scaffolding that Americans already trust. More from CSAIP advisor @KarenKornbluh: blog.csaip.org/p/washington-…

AI is arriving at a moment when Americans already believe the economy is rigged for the wealthy and powerful. That’s the lens through which they see every part of this story — jobs, AI, safety, all of it. That’s an opening for anyone willing to take it. People are looking for leaders who can name who they’re fighting for, and what they’re fighting to win for them. More from CSAIP Advisor and Blue Rose Research co-founder and CEO Jesse Stinebring in the next tweet.
