The @SINEIITB Semiconductor Accelerator Program was launched at @iitbombay, bringing together ecosystem partners committed to helping semiconductor startups move from working silicon to their first customer. For nearly three decades, the idea of intelligent physical systems was waiting for one thing: the technology to catch up. The ambition was clear: build systems that could sense what is happening, make decisions and act on the physical world. But the infrastructure wasn’t ready. Today, that is changing. The cost of sensors has fallen by more than 80%, making it possible to instrument physical environments at a scale that was previously difficult to justify. 5G and private networks are enabling sub-10ms latency, bringing real-time communication closer to the factory floor. Edge computing allows AI inference to happen at the asset level, reducing dependence on the cloud and enabling faster decisions. At the same time, AI is crossing an important threshold, moving beyond dashboards and insights towards autonomous operational control, from adjusting machine parameters to rerouting flows and responding to changing conditions. This evolution is captured by the Physical Intelligence Stack: Sensing → Transport → Data → Intelligence → Action. At its core is the sense-decide-act loop, enabling physical systems to move beyond simply generating data and displaying it on dashboards towards systems that can sense their environment, reason over that information and increasingly take action autonomously. And there are other forces accelerating the shift: growing pressure to optimise labour, increasing automation of physically demanding tasks, and regulatory requirements around efficiency and carbon reporting. Individually, these developments are significant. But the real shift comes from their convergence. For the first time, the critical pieces required to build and deploy physical intelligence are becoming mature at the same time. From an investment perspective, this convergence could make physical intelligence a foundational technology layer across manufacturing, logistics, energy and infrastructure, creating opportunities across the entire stack, from hardware and sensors to industrial software, AI and automation.
