Religious Tolerance In Action Today, I saw something that speaks directly to the kind of religious tolerance I have consistently advocated. Christians had finished their daily fellowship at about 1:55 p.m. at a worship centre where they regularly gather for fellowship during working hours. A few minutes past 2 p.m., a Muslim laid his prayer mat in the same worship centre and observed his prayers. No hostility, no argument, just people practising their faith. I have always believed that God is too great to be confined to one religion. Christians call Him God and worship Jesus Christ as the Son of God, while Muslims call Him Allah and revere Prophet Mohammed or Isa (Jesus). Our understanding of God (Allah), the identity of Jesus (Prophet Isa) and how we worship may differ, but these differences should not make us enemies. Who is holier or whose worship is more acceptable is a judgement that belongs to God, not us. Instead of spending our time hating one another because of religion or listening to leaders who tell one faith to “take back your country,” let us learn to live together in peace. We can hold firmly to our beliefs without disrespecting those of others. The scene I witnessed today is a reminder that we do not have to practice the same religion to respect one another. Humanity, the greatest religion is what binds us all. Let love, mutual respect and tolerance be our common ground.

Recruitment portal for Immigration, Civil Defence, others opens October 28 The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) will open its recruitment portal on October 28 for candidates who reached the oral interview stage. The portal will remain open until November 13. Secretary to the Board, Major-Gen. Abdulmalik Jibrin (rtd), announced the decision after the board’s meeting in Abuja on Thursday. He said the board agreed to open the portal because candidates have been waiting. “The board has considered and agreed, since candidates have been waiting, that by 28th of October, God willing, the portal will open for them to check their status. The portal will open from 28th October to 13th November,” Jibrin said. Candidates are to check their status on the portal and proceed for a mandatory drug test with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The test follows a federal government directive requiring every prospective employee to submit a certificate clearing them of illegal drug use before collecting an appointment letter. Successful candidates will generate a code from the portal, report to the NDLEA office in their respective states for the test, and later converge in Abuja to collect their appointment letters. The board oversees recruitment into the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Federal Fire Service, and the Nigeria Immigration Service. City Boy Movement Begins Cross River Tour, Inaugurates LG Offices October 27 The City Boy Movement in Cross River State will commence a statewide tour on October 27, 2026, with the inauguration of local government offices and registration centres as part of efforts to expand its grassroots presence and strengthen its organizational structure across the state. The tour will begin in the Northern Senatorial District, with visits to Obudu, Bekwarra and Obanliku on October 27, followed by Ogoja and Yala on October 28. The Movement will proceed to the Central Senatorial District on October 29, covering Ikom, Boki and Etung, before visiting Obubra, Yakurr and Abi on October 30. Beyond the inauguration of offices, the tour will provide an opportunity to mobilize new members and encourage interested residents to formally register with the Movement. It will also feature engagements focused on communicating the gains of the policies and reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Administration, alongside Governor Bassey Otu’s People First agenda. The statewide exercise forms part of the Movement’s efforts to build its grassroots network and engage communities ahead of the 2027 general elections. It will also serve as a platform to familiarize residents with the programmes and priorities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates. The City Boy Movement calls on its members, supporters and interested residents across the scheduled local government areas to participate actively in the exercise and support efforts to establish functional registration centres across the state. I had almost similar experience with ValueJet some months ago. I was traveling from Calabar to Abuja. I bought my ticket online and got confirmation of my ticket and payment. As I got to the counter to check in, I was told that my name was not on their record and then directed to their customer care desk. This was like 1 hour 40 minutes to departure. I was there till about 35 minutes to departure without any resolution. Suddenly, a young man who claimed to be their Manager showed up and directed that counter should be closed against me and others that had similar experience. Immediately he gave that directive, my ticket was confirmed. This send a signal to me that it was deliberate. Every attempt to get the so-called Manager to listen to me didn’t work as he walked out on us. While he shut the counter against us, I realized that some “special passengers” were still boarding. At that point, I had to pin him down that until he resolves our issue or speak with us well, he won’t leave. In the end, we realized that they sold tickets more than the capacity of the aircraft they brought, so the pilot raised safety concerns that forced them to drop some of us. But they didn’t even have the courage to be honest with us about this; it took the intervention of CRS Commissioner for Special Duties, Oden Ewa and former Commissioner for information , Asu Okan to know this. For me, @ibomairlines , even though can still mess up sometimes remain the most reliable local flight in Nigeria. Maybe, when CRS CallyAir starts, it’ll join the league of reliable airlines too.
I can’t remember which airline I was complaining about when some people told me to try Value Jet. They said they were quite reliable. So, I decided to try them today. Value Jet 4pm flight from Abuja to Lagos. Boarding was announced just after 4pm. We all got to the foot of the aircraft and the plane couldn’t take everyone. It turns out they had combined two flights. Some people were told at the foot of the plane that they couldn’t go on the flight. They took our hand luggages at the foot of the aircraft because the cabins, according to them, the cabins were full. We were not given any luggage tags. I asked and they said there was no need. As I boarded, they asked to see my boarding pass and said “Free seating after Row 8.” I asked, “What do you mean? I am in Business Class, seat 5A.” They found me a seat at 2A. When we were seated, they announced we were going to Lagos via Iperu, Ogun State. The lady Prof that sat next to me said we were taking the scenic route and we both laughed when they announced that we should sit back and relax.😀 When we got to Iperu, those of us going to Lagos were asked to stay onboard. It turns out that some people who were going to Lagos with us were planning to then go on to the Ijebu and Ikene axis from there. Given the unexpected detour to Iperu, they took the opportunity to disembark there. My process and quality assurance mind went to the integrity of the flight manifest. I had a window seat and just happened to see my hand luggage being taken to the terminal. Because it is an all-Aluminum case, it is rather distinctive and easily distinguishable. I had to shout. They said they would sort it out and would ask for all the bags to be brought back. That took another 10 minutes. When all the bags were brought back, we were then asked to disembark to identify our luggage. Some passengers had a few choice words for them.😀 They wondered what would have happened if I hadn’t seen my bag being taken to the terminal at Iperu. When we eventually re-boarded, they then made the usual apology for the delay “for operational reasons.” One guy shouted “Operational reasons kee you there!”😂 There were shouts of “fraud”, “scam” and “deceit” from the back. At 7:07 pm, three hours after boarding, we finally landed in Lagos. Somehow, I am not even in the mood to make wahala today. I just want to get to my hotel and have a cold beer.😀

Access To Decent Housing Should Never Be a Luxury Ordinary Nigerians Can’t Afford It is interesting to see that the House of Representatives is finally moving to enact legislation to regulate rent and protect tenants, even if the initiative is starting in the FCT. Nigerians will be watching closely to see how far the bill goes, especially as many landlords in major cities are politicians who may have a vested interest in the outcome. They steal from the ordinary people then build houses that the poor masses they are meant to serve can no longer afford to rent. I have consistently advocated government intervention in rent regulation because many of the factors that determine property values, like roads, electricity, security and other public infrastructure, are provided or facilitated by government. It is only fair that government also protects tenants from arbitrary rent increases and ensures that the housing market operates within reasonable limits. Arbitrary rent increases by landlord in Nigeria has become something else. The painful part is that landlords who built their houses in the Abraham Lincoln’s era will increase and justify it by the high cost of building materials. No maintenance, no renovation, no additional value to the property, yet the rent keeps going up. Tenants are left to bear the burden of rising costs, even when landlords have made no corresponding investment in improving their properties. If government invests public resources in creating an environment that makes properties more valuable, why should landlords have absolute control over what tenants pay? Property owners deserve fair returns on their investments but tenants also deserve protection from excessive and unjustified rent increases. Access to decent housing should not become a luxury that ordinary Nigerians can no longer afford.

Saw this on one of my Whatsapp groups. EKEDC IN DESPERATION _____ I installed an 18kW solar power system at my property in Lekki Phase 1, relegating EKEDC supply to a backup status. Since then, I have been having more frequent visits from personnel of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), coming to check my prepaid meter. On one of those visits, the EKEDC team stood watching the meter for motion to indicate consumption. When the meter wasn't moving, they called me to say they suspected I had bypassed the meter. I told them I had enough solar power for my daytime needs and only used their supply as a backup for the dark hours. To prove this to them, I switched on my inverter bypass for about 2 minutes so my consumption would be from EKEDC. They saw the meter rotating normally. They were visibly upset and one of them mumbled something like "This ọ̀gá no wan gree us chop". They left. Today (19-Oct-2026), three of them came to my premises with a notice of disconnection. The last time I loaded an EKEDC token was in July 2026 and I still had ample units left. When I asked why they would disconnect me, they said the reason was "LOR" (Loss of Revenue). They said my slow consumption indicates a faulty meter and I had to pay them ₦112,606 for loss of revenue. I told them my meter was not faulty and that they could test it if they wanted. The lady said they were losing revenue and they had to make up for it. I didn't know whether to laugh or to be angry. I have no intention of paying EKEDC a dime for its loss of revenue due to my taking steps to protect my interest. But, I share this story for all who are investing in solar power to know that the DisCos are now desperate. They now have "Loss of Revenue" as a reason for your disconnection from their supply. It is simply that they are not making enough money from you. I am waiting for EKEDC to disconnect me from their grid before I lodge a formal complaint to the regulatory authority. We are in interesting times in Nigeria! Raphael Awoseyin 19-Oct-2026

My dear brother Donald Duke, Some years ago, you and I travelled along the stretch of the coastline where this road now runs, and I clearly remember your praise for the vision behind it. That is why your recent comments surprised me. Yes, the Coastal Highway is expensive. We agree on that. But nothing of lasting value in this world is cheap or free. Great nations are built by leaders willing to make bold, costly investments that will serve generations yet unborn. Mr. President committed to funding this project, and he is keeping that commitment. There is no funding shortfall. The work is progressing, and the quality of construction is second to none. When Governor Douye Diri commended the road, he was not speaking as a local champion; he was speaking as a statesman who recognises infrastructure of international standard when he sees it. I agree with him completely. Donald, I understand that you are running for president, and that your statement is political. That is the nature of the season, and I respect your right to make your case to Nigerians. But we must be careful never to undermine a project of national importance, or the President delivering it, simply for political advantage. When mankind went to the moon, it was neither cheap nor free. But it was necessary. So is this road. -@benmurraybruce
