At the end of a week which has exposed the folly of the UK withdrawing from the European Union we have been on the streets of Leeds hearing views on Trump and what it means for us here in the UK. Conclusion? We share far more values with Europe than we do with Trump’s America.

Ten years ago this month that David Cameron dispensed with my services as AG. I had told him that his plans to scrap the HRA and threaten to leave the ECHR if it proved incompatible with his British Bill of Rights were unworkable and would not help solve our security or immigration challenges one bit. So it proved. When published, his plans were quickly shown to be flawed and never implemented. Ten years on, despite the repeated huffing and puffing, we still have both the HRA and the ECHR. This despite having had Suella Braverman as both Home Secretary and as a parody AG. One might have hoped that the penny would have dropped that the policy serves no useful purpose, as any minor benefit will be entirely outweighed by the downsides. We must be thankful that Rishi Sunak seems to have realised this as did the last AG Victoria Prentis. So it is depressing to see candidates for the Conservative leadership such as Tom Tugendhat return yet again to this theme. It has become a kind of ritual, without which no candidate feels they could be acceptable to the membership. And that I am afraid also shows how the Conservative Party continues to be mired in ideological fantasies that lead directly to its wipe out this year. For a Party whose members used to laugh at the inanity of Labour supporters singing the Red Flag at the end of their conferences, it is a sad reflection on where common sense has gone.

Pleased to question Keir Starmer is his 1st Prime Ministerial statement: on NATO and Europe. It's an important reset moment where MPs posed qs to him on rectifying the messes of the last government's making. Student exchanges are an area that could do with improvement:

An incredibly reassuring photo. Not just on its own terms, but because of the broader narrative around it.
We cannot let the challenges of the past define our relationships of the future. My government’s new approach to Europe, to make our country safer and more secure, starts today at the European Political Community summit.

There was no "levelling up" under you. On leaving the EU, you ensured entire regions & nations within the UK were levelled down by replacing the stable long-term European Regional Development Fund (EDRF) with fickle, delayed and reduced funding - causing closures and havoc.
Axing levelling up shows lack of ambition and a failure to believe in this country’s potential. Labour will axe Brexit next. Then they will pointlessly whack up taxes. The drift backwards has begun.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Labour didn't axe "levelling up," they renamed it to "local government" to focus on real improvements like economic growth and devolution, arguing the original term was just a slogan. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Leave EU shamelessly colluded in Russia's fog of confusion campaign after the Skripal attack. (Thanks @Russell46739210 for digging this one up) Leave EU representatives visited the Russian embassy as many as eleven times around the time of the referendum.

Not helping.
8 years ago today, I proudly voted for Brexit. While we delivered on the will of the people, Keir Starmer tried to reverse your vote. That’s the difference between us.

🆘🆘🆘 Dutch lorry drivers could stop bringing goods to UK if post-Brexit delays not cut 🆘 Lorry drivers could start rejecting jobs transporting goods from continental Europe to the UK unless delays are reduced and driver conditions improved at post-Brexit border posts, the biggest trade body for Dutch hauliers has warned. 🆘 Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN), which represents 5,000 Dutch transport companies, said its members were facing average waits of more than four hours in Britain because of the new checks brought in after the UK’s exit from the EU, with some being held at border posts for up to 20 hours. 🆘 It described the facilities that drivers were forced to wait in as “leaving a lot to be desired” and said most border facilities only offered water, with nowhere for drivers to get food or drink. In a four-page report outlining drivers’ experiences and shared with the Guardian, the association said: “We are increasingly receiving reports from hauliers that their drivers no longer want to drive to the UK unless conditions improve.” theguardian.com/politics/art…

🔥 “Brexit was a bad idea. And ultimately the UK would be better off inside the EU" Well said @carla_denyer. And how bizarre was Fiona Bruce’s interruption? Doesn’t she realise that circumstances & public opinion have changed dramatically over 8 years?

The whole problem with Brexit … whatever your reasons for voting for it, they have not delivered what you thought it would. So I’m sorry Mick but you do have to take some responsibility for the disaster it has become. Still, nice to hear Brexit being mentioned in the campaign. Rare event
