The problem is that some people from Myanmar and Indonesia seem to have a very limited understanding of Thailand's regional cultural diversity. Thailand shares borders and centuries of cultural history with several neighboring countries. Different regions naturally developed different traditions through migration, trade, and cultural exchange. Northern Thailand has Lanna traditions shaped by historical connections with Myanmar, Tai ethnic communities, and other neighboring societies. Northeastern Thailand has its own Isan traditions, with cultural connections to Laos and Cambodia. Central Thailand has its own distinctive historical clothing and court traditions. Southern Thailand has long-standing cultural connections with the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia, including traditions of wearing and producing batik and Pateh textiles. These regional traditions are not all the same, and nobody needs to pretend they were all invented in Central Thailand. The brand's use of "PAK TAI" refers to Southern Thailand and its regional fashion heritage. It doesn't automatically mean the designer is claiming that Thailand invented Indonesian batik. Thai cultural institutions have already documented the historical influence of Indonesian and Malaysian batik on Southern Thai textile traditions. This is what shared cultural heritage means. A tradition can have its origins in one society and become part of another community's cultural life through generations of adoption and adaptation. Being practiced within Thailand doesn't erase its original cultural roots. Likewise, having origins outside Thailand doesn't erase the history of the communities in Thailand that have practiced it for generations. Thailand's regional diversity is not evidence of cultural theft. It's evidence of centuries of cultural interaction. Before accusing an entire country of stealing, perhaps try understanding the difference between cultural origin, shared heritage, and regional identity. Just because you recognize something from your own culture doesn't mean nobody else has a legitimate history with it.
