#cyberpunkartday 22. Occasionally, we need to fill space in a book. Maybe because text doesn’t fully fill a column. Maybe because a chapter is a page short. When we do, I make up a quote or an ad. I love this sort of worldbuilding. It feels immersive and adds lived life details.

In the case of the page I’m displaying today, I asked myself what the internet/social media looked like in Cyberpunk RED. I was inspired by multiple sources, from V’s data term in 2077 to MySpace and modern shopping sites. The Smash cans were icing on the cake.

The books are all ones that exist in universe with art from Cyberpunk 2020 color plates. The Garden and Smash logos were designed by me. Sometimes my graphic design experience comes in handy.

#cyberpunkartday 21. When it came time to publish a book about the internet of the dark future, the 2020 team decided to experiment with CGI. These digital dolphins were provided by Wavefront via Silicon Graphics. They are a fascinating artifact of early digital art in TTRPGs.

#cyberpunkartday 20. Often, Cyberpunk is grim, gritty, dark, and serious. It asks hard questions about life, society, and the nature of humanity. Occasionally, we highlight the absurd, instead. Such as in this piece by Sebastian Szmyd.

Constantly pounding on the drum of drama without acknowledging the inherent comedy of a world wears out both the creators and the audience. It also can create something flat, shallow, and unsatisfying. Comedy, dark comedy included, is part of our nature too.

#cyberpunkartday 19. Benjamin Wright reworked much of the weapon art in Blackhand’s Street Guide. The weapons illustrated ranged from the simple to the strange, sometimes drawing from real world examples that were cool in theory but failures in practice. Weird guns make fun guns!

One of these days, I want to hear what Maximum Mike sounds like in 2077 localizations. Who did they get to play the boss?

#cyberpunkartday 18. Welcome to South Night City. A combat not because of the residents but due to the greed of the man who paid to run it. This piece by Neil Branquinho is messy and violent and dark and encapsulates the feeling of night on the struggling street perfectly.

Friends, physical power & combat prowess doesn’t matter much in the world of Cyberpunk. Not in the grand scheme of things. Saburo Arasaka killed more people with a few words than V, Morgan, Adam Smasher, and every Solo that ever walked the streets of Night City did with weapons.

Donald killed more people and ruined more lives than every regular at the Afterlife put together. All without picking up a gun or a blade. Power in Cyberpunk comes with stock options, ego, and a total disregard for anything but winning.

#cyberpunkartday 17. What you’re looking at, choombas, is THE original braindance player. Back in the late 80s, the RTG crew assembled this mockup and used it to illustrate an article in Rockerboy, a supplement for the original edition of Cyberpunk.

The reason for the drink is braindance units were common in bars (circa 2013 in world) the same way bartop Pong units were common in the 1970s. Photo by Mike Pondsmith and Colin Fisk.
