Behavior management can get a classroom through the moment.
Relationship maintenance is what helps us get through the year.
Students are more likely to accept correction from adults they trust. That trust is not built by avoiding consequences or lowering expectations. It is built when students know the relationship can survive a hard conversation, a mistake, a consequence, and the work of repairing what happened.
That means checking in before there is a problem. Following through after there is one. Making sure students know that being corrected does not mean being written off.
The goal is not to create a classroom where no one ever needs redirection.
It is to build relationships strong enough that redirection does not become disconnection.
