Me: *is terribly anxious that I’m somehow injecting hormones wrong, and will thus sabotage my FET on Friday* Me: *cries, like heavily cries, at every slightly sad social media post* Me: oh thank god I’m doing it right. #IVF #shoutyourivf #embryoadoption #protectivf

This is AMAZING! Despite their present issues I’ve always felt that with CAR-T we are on the cusp of something huge. Those patients have a lot of challenges right now but it’s absolutely revolutionary and these are early days still.

I teach patho to nursing students. Every semester since spring of 2020, I have taught about Covid. And every semester to have to change my lecture to keep up with new data. I was teaching Covid this semester and I told them that if nothing else, understand the science 1/n

The world is a terrible place right now and we likely don’t know what others are going through or what they’re doing to try to make things better, a lot of which is not on social media. A little love and grace go a long way.

*me at work*: Alright, let’s ensure you’re properly boosted in bed, pillows are just right, got a warm blanket, HOB adjusted…we can’t have anything less! *me at home*: plops self halfway down bed, splats out on stomach without pillow, dangling feet off end of bed at weird angle

I’ve always felt the same way-we could have so much better. Everyone’s QoL would improve. I think the main thing is, empathy can inhibit competitiveness as non-empathetic people can comfortably do anything to gain an edge. Thus they’re the ones in power.

This happened with someone I was close to in 2018 with the flu. S/p lung transplant. They thought he was “paranoid” about the flu and it “wasn’t a big deal”. Triggered high grade rejection 3 years post tx, dismal prognosis, actually beat it (we caught it early and fought hard)

I *never* forgave the person responsible. Most stressful year of my life. I’d bought him a hospital grade spirometer and we caught the small airway decline the day it happened. Used Belgian protocol with pulsed azithromycin (actually evidence based for rejection) plus steroids.

Later on someone pulled the same crap with fungus/mold and laughed it off. Thankfully he didn’t get it. That would’ve been a death sentence.

Why are Americans oft unwilling to stop driving? Because our public transit is so awful that no car often means no job, no seeing family, no seeing friends. We need better public transit so we reduce car use without trapping people. #fixpublictransit #weneedinfrastructure

Again read the whole thread but this is why sleep promotion is so incredibly important. There’s no way we can make serious illness entirely atraumatic but there’s so much more we can do.
Replying to @doctorORbust
I got home, thanks to a friend who pretty much had to help me up each individual stair so I didn't tip over at home. I was somewhere between walker and cane use at this point. I got my first night of sleep, I almost prayed it would fix things. It did, my mind was clear.

This whole thread is so important but this is why it’s important to pay close attention to nonverbal clues, especially the eyes. If you think they’re there, they probably are. Facilitate communication any way you can. Better to look whacky than let someone be locked in.

Eventually, it was my lovely wife who noticed I was really trying to speak. She convinced people I was really trying to speak. I was. Garbled speech became low-volume speech. But I still couldn't move. I remember like the scene in Kill Bill I thought "move my toes."

Had a patient once whom few believed was trying to communicate for two weeks. Two. Weeks. Finally an amazing, highly experienced support staff person figured it out and got them to be able to write. They immediately asked about something they were going to help their spouse with

This was an alert and oriented individual with a perfectly working mind who was locked in for two weeks. I think about this case at least once a week myself and probably always will. Even then it was a while before everyone believed they were there as motor skills fluctuated.

YES! Nothing erodes your freedom like illness.
Replying to @FrankCianfrani
I just can’t wrap my head around how many people equate constant illness with freedom… such a lack of critical thinking.
