Americans are clear about what they want from #AI. Our latest polling shows they prioritize safety over speed, prevention of harm and deception (especially for vulnerable populations), protecting privacy and personal data, and keeping humans in charge. They also hold deployers of AI just as accountable as the developers.
Business is starting to respond.
This week the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure, a CEO-led coalition, added new members to prepare for AI-powered attacks on banking, technology, energy, telecommunications, and transportation. Citigroup‘s Jane Fraser told Axios that capturing AI’s upside means accepting “the responsibility that comes with it.”
Banks are also fighting AI deception where it hurts most: in people’s accounts. Today the American Bankers Association relaunched its #BanksNeverAskThat and #PracticeSafeChecks campaigns. Banks across the country can use the new videos and materials to help customers spot scams. As the ABA’s Paul Benda told the Senate this summer, generative AI “is not replacing traditional scams. It is industrializing them.”
On innovation, Vertex Pharmaceuticals is using AI to speed up its research and development, and is hiring business talent with quantitative training. Zoom has committed $10 million over three years to AI education and opportunity, with $5 million going to K-12 AI literacy through partners including Code.org.
But commitments like these are still rare. In our corporate disclosure analysis, only 9% of Russell 1000 companies report investing in community AI initiatives. Only 10% disclose a policy that explicitly addresses harm, deception, or manipulation, which is the public’s top priority.

"Skepticism is welcome. The more employees get used to the technology and use it, they see the benefit for themselves as well." - Edgar Romney, Chief Strategy and Administration Officer at @AmalgamatedBank, speaking on how the company is helping its employees become more comfortable with #AI tools.

This week, @Idealab founder @real_bill_gross launched Idealab.ai, a free platform that makes more than 1.2 million AI-generated business ideas searchable, with tools to test and build them. His aim is to help create a million new businesses and 100 million jobs, offsetting those #AI may displace.
It’s great timing for those just starting out. In our August survey of 1,007 Americans aged 18 to 25, 47% worried that AI would make it harder to land an entry-level job in their field. Nearly one in four (24%) are starting or considering starting their own business because of concerns about AI, and 36% would use time freed up by AI to build a side hustle.
It may also produce better businesses. Our own @MWhittaker_ explains how: linkedin.com/pulse/36-recent…
Important to remember that the general public holds #AI developers and enterprise deployers as nearly equally responsible for data security breaches:
SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, including some attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions, sources told Axios.
The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios.
Several banks are now preparing for worst-case and even “day after” scenarios, including how to rapidly secure or restore customer accounts if things go wrong, the people said.
Several bank executives told Axios they're struggling to distinguish between human users and AI agents. One executive said banks also struggle to determine whether agents are authorized by customers or potentially operating without their permission, more akin to rogue agent behavior.

Our research shows that more than 3/4 of frequent #AI users are likely to support a pause in development to address safety issues (78%). justcapital.com/news/the-jus…
A majority of U.S. adults said AI is a bad thing for society, with about one-third saying it is “extremely” or “very” bad.
Roughly two thirds of Americans overall say the government is not doing enough to regulate the growth and development of AI. wapo.st/47ssKtw
A few of the latest pieces of data from our National #AI Monitor:
✅ About half of Americans aged 25 to 54 expected AI to help them in the coming years, while 18-24 were notably less optimistic. Among 55+ the split between positivity and negativity was almost exactly even.
💰 Only 34% of those earning under $50,000 expected AI to improve their lives, compared with 44% to 48% in higher brackets. 23% of lower-income Americans were not sure. Optimism rose with income in August as well.
👧 Only 35% of women expected AI to improve their lives, compared with 54% of men, and were slightly more likely to expect harm (36%) than benefit.

Amazing to see @AnthropicAI committing 5% of its IPO to the public good. As I've said for a long time, AI needs a new story and the most important thing AI companies can do is articulate their investment in humans, not just machines.
This is the theme of my conversation with Anthropic president @DanielaAmodei for Alice Walton's Health and AI conference, which we'll be sharing later this week. Daniela and I explore recursive self-improvement for humans, the potential for AI hyper-personalization to transform health, and the value of human wisdom in a world where AI is dethroning intelligence. It’s time to stop placing all our bets on the machines!

Good. 65% of Americans believe that the public should recieve a direct financial benefit from the wealth AI companies generate: justcapital.com/news/the-jus…
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit.
It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion.
In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding.
In the post below, we share more details about our new fund.

The American public agrees. 79% of the public assign responsibility to companies that build that systems if an AI program goes wrong.
