🏛️ BEAUMONT, TEXAS: THE HISTORY BENEATH THE SURFACE Part 2: Did You Know Beaumont Was Named After a Woman? Many people know Beaumont, Texas, for its oil industry, but how many know where the city’s name originated? Beaumont was named after Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont, the wife of businessman and town founder Henry Millard. Mary passed away in 1834, one year before Henry helped establish the town along the Neches River. The city officially received its charter in 1838. But here’s what makes this history interesting: Mary never lived in the city that bears her name. And before it became Beaumont, the area was known as Tevis Bluff, a settlement associated with Noah and Nancy Tevis. Beaumont’s history began long before the discovery of oil at Spindletop. As I continue researching the history of my hometown, I’m discovering how many stories are hidden behind the places and names we’ve known our entire lives.
