In Fahrenheit 451, the chief book-burner, Captain Beatty, describes how reading became obsolete because the public demanded increasingly fast-paced entertainments, and those entertainments slowly corroded their ability to think. β€œBooks cut shorter. Condensations. Digests, tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending. Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-minute book column … Many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed, β€˜Now at last you can read all the classics.’ … School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches?” In this passage Ray Bradbury foretells the intellectual hollowing out of the working class, the advent of AI-generated β€œsummaries” of classic novels, the attention-frying culture of short-form video, the relaxation of educational standards into non-existence. All of this in a book published in 1953.
Starting to really understand why a core theme of dystopian novels is that nobody reads

This is former USN Admiral Eileen Laubacher, I say former because in his purge of senior military ( mostly female) Hegseth fired her. Yesterday she beat Lauren Boebert in the election and is now in the congress. She will be on the select committee to interrogate him

Governments don't generally impose time limits on motions they are confident in defending. So for the UCP to have just 1 hour of debate on their new electoral map, it's an indication this whole thing is exactly what we think it is β€” cheating. #ableg edmontonjournal.com/news/pol…

Stunned silent. "Within an hour of the first results, Trump was so furious that he briefly lost the ability to speak, holed up in his second-floor private residence with Harp, his executive assistant, and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. β€œHe’s watching Fox News barely uttering a word and paralyzed into silence,” one insider told the Mail. β€œIt’s very, very dark in the residence,” another added. β€œIt’s a dark scene.”
Donald Trump was so angry at his breathtaking midterm defeat that he holed himself up in the dark with his ever-present aide, Natalie Harp, as the results rolled in. thedailybeast.com/white-hous…

Well, I don’t know, man, but looking back at that February 2025 Oval Office shitshow, some 20 months later, one guy from that meeting is bombing Moscow and St. Petersburg on a daily basis, another has suffered a spectacular failure in Iran and a crushing electoral defeat, and the third, the one with the big mouth, may well have kissed his presidential ambitions goodbye. So, who had the cards?

I can’t believe how Bob Dylan was dressed when he had his audience with Pope Leo.
Pope Leo XIV met with American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in a private audience on Wednesday, November 4.

Tonight, the American people sent a clear message β€” they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face. These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country β€” including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy. While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.

Good! I’m proud to have a prime minister with such a strong backbone.
Mark Carney: "Russia and Belarus are supporting this illegal and unjustified horrific war in Ukraine, as long as that's going on, there will be none of those athletes competing for their countries in Canada. So if you're asking specifically about the World Juniors, the Russians will not be there."

Once the UCP in Alberta gerrymanders a district like this, there’s no going back. The precedent is set and the cycle begins. Democracy in the province will rot even faster than it’s rotting now. Draw the battle lines and dig in for a fight, because this one matters.
