The biggest honour of my writing career - I’ve won the Tom Howard/John Reid Fiction Prize for my story “Black Sky Blue Earth.” Coming first out of 2000 is mind-blowing. And the prize money buys me a LOT of writing time. I’m so grateful

Extra fun facts. I’m the first writer to have 3 stories make the finals, I love this story, I love the illustration they made - AND I got a certificate and a t-shirt. Plus my fiction merited a press release! It’s all a bit overwhelming loom.ly/6yl-vlE
My 100th published story! So happy its a story I love in a title I love. And the judge's review (in comments) overjoyed me. 3 years ago, if you'd told me I'd have 100 stories in the world (90 of which I love) i wouldn't have believed it. Thanks to the readers & eds who helped (1)

New newsletter featuring two new stories featuring big beasts. The Wild Ones is a nostalgic hopeful story that won the Colombia Journal Prose Prize and the other is a dinosaur story with interview and audio version with the amazing Foofaraw. jaimegill.substack.com/p/do-…
I can finally reveal that a flash I am very fond of - a tender queer love story set in the liminal world of airport transit zones - won Santa Clara Review’s “Flash In Bloom” contest. Won’t be out til next year sadly. But look at the pretty picture!
Delighted to have a story in in the uniquely brilliant Panorama - a journal about ethical travel, mixing reportage & fiction. Falling is about a troubled cross-cultural romance, ending with an army of ghosts (or are they?) from my favourite Cambodian myth

I have a moment to enjoy while it lasts. The incredible @PrismLitMag
have named my fever dream of a story called, um, The Fever, as one of their 9 shortlisted entrants for their Grouse Grind Prize. I dont expect to go further, but my God I'm happy to be here
There’s going to be a whole BOOK of Emily Rinkema’s miniature miracles! A whole BOOK! What joyous news.

I've cried a lot of happy tears in the past 24 hours. This is my first collection, and I'm thrilled to be working w/
@MCzyzniejewski & @MoonCityPress to bring it alive. I'm so so grateful to this whole flash community. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this opportunity! ❤️
“Brilliantly crafted, this thought-provoking story lingers, revealing new layers with repeated readings.” Honoured (and shocked!) my 100-word frozen moment story has come #1 out of 800 in the New Writers contest.
(BTW the end may not be what you think)

Last two days, while reading fiction for TBLM, I’ve made two “likely AI-use” notes on stories. Thing isn’t easy to catch. It took me time with the story to develop a strong enough suspicion. That time is pure waste. Tools aren’t free at scale. AI will do serious harm to litmags.
Heartfelt story about why it means so much that Masters Review published Obedience. I love the story but also… 3 years ago MR saved me from giving up my writing dream.

My historical story Obedience is out in @MastersReview, my attempt to capture the climate of fear, oppression & brutality in New York’s gay bars before the Stonewall uprising. I love my MC, I’m proud of the story and grateful to MR for giving it a home

Very grateful to @UnderReviewLit for nominating me for a Pushcart Prize 2026. I love Everyone Has A Plan, my story about love & kickboxing. It's also the story that landed me my first hring as a screenwriter, so I'm even more grateful. underreviewlit.com/issue-11-…

I've seen / heard of a couple of instances recently where lit mags had accepted a piece, then later changed their mind. I think that is totally, totally unacceptable behaviour.

So grateful FFF is reprinting an older story of mine - Notes For A Eulogy - especially as the ed had to recode his website to make the experimental formatting work! A short version of this came #2 in the Bridport Prize for flash, but I think it has twice the impact at 500 words.

Thank you Pithead Chapel, for publishing NO OBITS, inspired by a 1998 headline from Bay Area Reporter @eBARnews to mark the first week since 1981 without new AIDS deaths. The new meds WORKED. Not a cure, but a reprieve. I try to capture that bittersweet moment in this tiny story

Feeling discouraged? Read this:
Editors & agents like what they like. They just do. A rejection is NOT (always) about the quality of your work. It often has no bearing on your talents, your ideas, your vision or your potential.
Keep finding ways to improve. Keep challenging yourself. Keep getting better. Do it for you--because it keeps your craft dynamic and interesting & yes, leads to more publications.
But don't sweat rejections. Really. They so often really truly very literally mean absolutely nothing!!
