Indian-American Muslim politician Nabeela Syed, 27, has won Illinois’ 26th State Senate District, defeating Republican Darby Hills with approximately 57% of the vote. A vocal critic of Israel, Syed has described Israel’s war on Gaza as a genocide and opposed US support for Israel. Her victory comes despite criticism from pro-Israel media outlets over her stance on Palestine. In 2022, she became the youngest woman elected to the Illinois General Assembly.
