🚨 Arsene Wenger on why the talk about Cesc Fabregas next job misses what he’s doing at Como: “Someone showed me the score at 8–1 and asked, ‘How long before a big club comes for Cesc?’ “I said, ‘How long have you been watching?’ “He said, ‘I’ve only just seen the score.’ “I said, ‘Then you’ve got eight reasons to put the game on.’ “When Cesc was young at Arsenal, he was very good at seeing what could happen after the pass he was about to play. The difficult part, at that age, is persuading a man who’s played five hundred games that you can see something he hasn’t seen yet. “I remember asking him about a pass he’d played into a teammate with a man right behind him. I said, ‘What did you expect him to do with that?’ “He told me, ‘Give it back. His man had followed him, so I could run into the space.’ “I said, ‘Did he know you were going to run there?’ “He said, ‘He will next time.’ “I liked that answer. The first time, your teammate can think you’ve given him a bad ball. The second time, he can give it back to you without even looking. There’s a lot of work between those two passes. “That’s what I wanted to see when Como were three up at half-time. Lens made changes. The crowd had fifteen minutes to tell themselves the next goal could make it a game again. Then the second half starts, Nico Paz gets the ball and Lucas Da Cunha goes straight back to making the run he believes Nico will see. Within two minutes, it’s four. “People will remember the eight. I’ll remember how quickly they got the fourth. I’ve been in enough dressing rooms to know how tempting it is, at 3–0, to congratulate everybody on a very good half and spend the next one trying to preserve it. Como came out and picked up the conversation they’d been having with the ball. “The man who showed me the score came back to it. He said, ‘But surely Cesc is ready for a bigger job now?’ “I said, ‘Of course he is. Look how much bigger the job at Como has become since he took it.’ “Think of a supporter who has spent years going to the same ground. For a long time, if he wanted to explain what his club meant to him, he had to tell you about going with his father, or where they used to stand, or the player he loved whom you’d probably never heard of. He knew exactly why it mattered. He couldn’t always expect you to. “Now he can ring the same people who used to ask him, ‘How did Como get on?’ out of politeness. Before he can say a word, they’re asking him, ‘What on earth have you got going on down there?’ “I imagine he’s been waiting quite a long time to have that conversation. I’d let him finish it before asking where his manager should go next.”

Well, there goes the main reason for subscribing to the Sunday Telegraph.
I was hoping to be able to announce this in my own time – but the media rumour mill is swirling, I'm being contacted by various reporters and others, and I don't like denying the truth, so ... I wrote my first "Economic Agenda" column in The Sunday Telegraph 27 years ago, under the editorship of Dominic Lawson – filling-in occasionally during the late-1990s, before being given my own weekly slot from 2003. Since then, while I've been heavily involved in television, and am perhaps better known as a broadcaster, penning "Economic Agenda" for The Sunday Telegraph each week has been the backbone of my journalistic life. On Thursday, the @Telegraph rang to tell me my column is being scrapped. I was asked, and have agreed, to write "Economic Agenda" until the end of November, as per my contract. After that, my Sunday Telegraph column will be no more. Why this decision has been made, and whether or not my columns were any good, is for others to judge. All I will say is that, as the first person in my family to attend university, sustaining a weekly column in a leading national newspaper for a quarter of a century has been a source of enormous pride for myself and my family. Lots of people have been asking me about the future of "Planet Normal" - the hugely-popular Telegraph podcast which I co-created and co-present with the brilliant @AllisonPearson "Planet Normal" has, over the last 330 weekly episodes, also become a major part of my professional life and my broader identity. With Allison reportedly leaving the Telegraph as well, there is a lot of speculation about whether or not the podcast will continue to impart "news and views from beyond the bubble" with our usual blend of sharp analysis, humour and occasional outrage ! Well, I am delighted to confirm that Co-Pilot Pearson and myself are deeply committed to our joint podcast – and, above all, to our beloved listeners. We will, as and when notice periods allow, continue our voyages through space every Thursday – perhaps to "Planet Normal", or maybe to another part of the solar system – so we can "gaze down each week at the madness of Planet Earth", as we have done since the Spring of 2020. So citizens of Planet Normal, stand ready ! The "rocket-of-right-thinking", the "flying refuge of reasoned views", will soon be launched once again 🚀🪐👨‍🏭👱‍♀️🎙️📺 I poured my heart and soul into "Economic Agenda" and "Planet Normal". The Telegraph's decision to scrap them is obviously a huge personal blow. But I will always be grateful for the opportunities the paper has given me. Above all, I would like to thank the illustrious list of successive Telegraph business editors I've worked with since the late-1990s, many of whom have become and remain good friends - including @Peston @RobertsDan @larmitstead @neilbenet @benjaminmarlow @cg_williams @kamalahmednews @MarkKleinmanSky @jamesrquinn (sorry if I've forgotten anyone, it's been a long time!) On Friday, even though I almost always write my column from elsewhere, and despite being extremely disappointed by the paper's decision, I decided to go into the Telegraph and write today's column sitting in the newsroom. I am glad I did - as being at the heart of the paper at such a difficult time allowed for lots of conversations, with everyone from junior production staff to senior reporters and executives, which reminded me that journalism, despite being an industry at the whim of seemingly endless and often brutal commercial and technological upheaval, is not only hugely important to our country, but full of talented, decent people. See picture below, having just filed my piece, as I was heading out the door ...

Cherish every moment you watch Declan Rice in an #Arsenal shirt. Warriors like this come along once in every other generation, and today he came to Anfield with one intention, and one intention only. 14 years of waiting; this is what a true £100m midfielder looks like. Masterclass.

Declan Rice continuing to make a mockery of Graeme Souness’ woeful analysis of his game on a weekly basis. Superb goal against Bayern, now leading the way for Premier League assists this season. Just a monstrous player all over the pitch. The complete midfielder.

No surprise. Common sense and football don’t go hand in hand. It will be fun to watch on a weekly basis the countless examples of far worse incidents going completely unpunished. Hopefully a valuable learning experience for Dowman though. Can’t afford to get sucked in to incidents like this.

A couple of days on and my only wish from this is that we had some of our players from the Keown, Parlour, Lauren era around for it. Their player knew exactly what he was doing, and seeing Dowman’s knee then ankle buckle from the aggressive follow through, his reaction was the very least that could have been expected. Their players decided to act tough on him and the referee couldn’t wait to make a name for himself. You know that our players mentioned above would have given Max a lot more protection and put the jumped up two bob lot in their place. Can’t stand bullies and pretend hard nuts.

This is really poor by @FA. The governing body is supposed to protect players. It should be disputing this regulatory commission verdict by members drawn from the FA judicial panel. Max Dowman could have suffered a bad injury to his standing leg from a dangerous challenge which went unpunished. Arsenal 16-year-old shouldn’t have reacted but his frustration was understandable. Some other players might have rolled around and ensured a bad challenge was punished. Dowman didn’t. He doesn’t stay down. The FA should have shown some understanding towards Dowman. Instead, it has suspended him for three games. FA priorities all wrong: tolerating a poor challenge and some weak refereeing but punishing a kid who objected to a bad challenge that could have dealt him a serious injury. Protect players. #AFC

An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week. Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461. This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc. This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed. It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them. What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%! We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons. This will not end well.
🚨 NEW: John Healey will increase the minimum wage for over 21s from £12.71 to around £13.20
