“Jimmy Lai and Joshua Wong carried Hong Kongers’ voices to the world and inspired many to stand up for freedom. Today, Beijing is punishing them for it.” Tonight, at the Lincoln Memorial, @Frances_Hui joined @NEDemocracy and the October 30 Coalition to mark the International Day of Political Prisoners, speaking about two Hong Kongers from different generations who are paying the same price for freedom. Jimmy Lai fled Communist China at 12 and built a life in Hong Kong defending the freedom it gave him, founding Apple Daily to give Hong Kongers a voice. Now 78, he has spent nearly six years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, and was sentenced to 20 years in February. Joshua Wong, who rose to prominence as a teenage activist, turned 30 this month, spending his sixth birthday in a row behind bars, and he now faces another sentence for his international advocacy. They have not given up on Hong Kong, and we must not give up on them.

One of the most interesting things I’ve read all week: an account of what it was like to cover the Tiananmen massacre, and the ethical dilemmas arising in its aftermath. And a reminder that even when people have never known democracy, in the right conditions they are willing to risk their lives for it.
For the 175th anniversary of the @nytimes, I recall covering the Tiananmen massacre and share a secret of the time. A young Chinese who had helped us cover the protests escaped from prison and asked me for help fleeing China. So what to do? Gift link: nytimes.com/2026/10/30/world…

Eighty-five years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt and Wendell Willkie came together across party lines to help establish Freedom House. Today, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren invite a new generation to carry that legacy forward: freedomhouse.org/article/mes… #FreedomHouse85

Eighty-five years ago today, Freedom House was founded to serve as a “beacon lighting [the] struggle for a free world”. This telegram, sent to Eleanor Roosevelt days earlier from Freedom House cofounder Herbert Agar, outlined plans for an organization that would urge Americans to reject isolationism and stand against the fascist forces advancing across Europe. Since 1941, Freedom House has worked across party lines to defend democracy and stand with people risking their lives for freedom. We are proud to carry that legacy forward, and you can be part of its next chapter: freedomhouse.org/investing-f…

Honoured to participate in Roll Call for Freedom, a solemn ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial to mark the International Day of Political Prisoners and read out the names of people unjustly imprisoned around the world. The worst nightmare of a political prisoner is to be forgotten. We will never allow this to happen. #FreeThemAll – at Washington, DC

Today, on the International Day of Political Prisoners, we will gather at the Lincoln Memorial to honour all those imprisoned for their beliefs — and to be the voices for those whom dictatorships are trying to silence. Please join us at 5:00pm at the Roll Call for Freedom. ned.org/events/roll-call-for… – at Washington, DC

President Reagan was right almost 50 years ago when he warned the Cuban people that their supposed leaders would do nothing but line their own pockets under the guise of Communism.

Freedom House Latin America and Caribbean Program Director Alejandra Argueta joined @FoxNoticiasEnX to discuss the growing threat of transnational repression and the recent "acto de repudio" targeting Cuban activists during UN events in New York. These tactics are designed to intimidate and silence voices demanding fundamental freedoms. Watch the interview below. #SOSCuba #TransnationalRepression

Last week, Cuban diplomats harassed former political prisoners at the @UN. Yesterday, they tried to intimidate @USAmbUN Mike Waltz. Today, more countries than ever rejected Havana's propaganda. @freedomhouse will continue to ensure that the Cuban people's voices are heard.
The Castro regime has profited at the expense of the Cuban people with luxury cars, expensive watches and a private island resort. As I shared this with the world, regime thugs rushed the stage to interrupt my speech. They can intimidate their own people in Cuba but think again about trying that nonsense in the United States of America.

This was incredible. At the start of this process, we knew that @POTUS and @SecRubio’s leadership would get results. So @USambUN led the team to deny the Cuban regime their propaganda vote — and we did it. The Donroe Doctrine in effect!
Today nearly triple the number of nations voted no, abstained, or just chose not to vote—turning their back on Havana’s sham resolution at the UN. More work to do, but the world is starting to push back on Cuban regime propaganda as their corruption and oppression is exposed. Cuba Libre!

This month, Joshua Wong turned 30 behind bars. His case spotlights ongoing suppression of political freedoms in Hong Kong. In a new @BylineTimes interview, Andrew Duncan reflects on Wong’s activism and imprisonment. Freedom House calls for Joshua’s immediate and unconditional release. The corrupt Cuban regime is holding 800 political prisoners in brutal conditions. Grateful to the brave dissidents José Daniel Ferrer and Orlando Gutiérez-Boronat who joined at the UN today to press the case against Havana’s corrupt dictators.

The Cuban foreign minister and his subordinates tried to shut down Mike Waltz at the U.N. as he called out Havana’s corruption. They only amplified the U.S. Ambassador’s message. on.wsj.com/4z9ba9X

Southeast Asia remains a hotspot for transnational repression, accounting for half of the 126 physical incidents recorded by Freedom House in 2025. Recent cases, including the disappearance of a Laotian asylum seeker in Thailand and the forced return of Vietnamese activists from Cambodia, underscore the dangers facing dissidents in exile. Our latest #TNRWatch examines these cases and calls for stronger international action to protect those targeted. Read more: freedomhouse.org/article/tnr…
