The US-Israeli capacity to do dumb things should not be underestimated. If the US strikes Iranian oil sites, Iran will strike oil production facilities around the Gulf. The upshot will be prolonged decline in production and an increased prospect of Iran developing nukes.
Exclusive: U.S. and Israel draw up plans for renewed strikes on Iran after midterm elections. Iranian officials have promised to retaliate this time by expanding their targets, saying war will not be quick nor limited. Our story: w/ @julianbarnes @EricSchmittNYT @ronenbergman @natan_oden

My concern as well. This is not deterrence but throwing matches around a pile of fireworks, and hoping to trigger an explosion for political reasons.

Hate to say it but they're both right
Doesn't it seem a little awkward for the UAE to run a candidate for UN Secretary General at the same time the UAE is arming the RSF militia committing mass murder and mass rape in Sudan?

Diplomatic Visits to Tehran, but War Still Looms
🔹The past two days have seen a significant uptick in diplomatic activity surrounding #Iran, with several high-level visits to Tehran. But despite the intensity of these contacts, there are still few indications of a diplomatic breakthrough. In fact, the risk of renewed military confrontation appears greater than the prospect of an agreement.
🔹First, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Tehran after attending a Russia-GCC meeting, holding talks with senior Iranian officials. Then came Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, who has previously served as a channel for exchanging messages between Tehran and Washington.
🔹Meanwhile, there have been reports of an aircraft used by Emirati officials making two round trips to Tehran in two days. Now, some Iranian sources report that a Qatari delegation also briefly visited Tehran, arriving around the time Munir departed.
🔹The diplomatic activity is therefore quite extensive, involving Russia, Pakistan, Qatar, and potentially the UAE. There are also reports of new proposals concerning the nuclear issue, frozen Iranian assets, and security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.
🔹However, the Iranian response so far suggests that the fundamental disagreements remain unresolved.
🔹During his meeting with Munir, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated that Washington must first meet Iran’s seven conditions to rebuild trust. More importantly, SNSC Secretary Mohsen Rezaei explicitly rejected proposals to transfer Iran’s enriched uranium abroad, declaring that not even a small amount would leave the country. He also ruled out negotiations before the United States takes concrete steps to restore trust.
🔹These statements are particularly significant because they come from figures at the center of Iran’s security decision-making. They suggest that Tehran has yet to see an offer substantial enough to justify changing its position.
🔹From the Iranian perspective, lifting the blockade and releasing frozen assets are insufficient in exchange for major nuclear concessions. Washington, meanwhile, appears unwilling to offer broader sanctions relief without tangible Iranian concessions.
🔹There is also the military dimension. Reports of intensified U.S. and Israeli preparations, including the recent unannounced visit of Pete Hegseth to Israel, suggest that diplomacy is taking place alongside preparations for another possible round of fighting.
🔹Against this backdrop, the latest visits may be intended as much to communicate final positions, warnings, and red lines as to facilitate an agreement. Regional actors have strong reasons to prevent another war, while Russia has an interest in preserving its diplomatic relevance.
🔹But mediation cannot resolve the conflict unless one or both parties are willing to reconsider their demands. So far, there is little evidence of that. Both Tehran and Washington still appear to believe that additional pressure could improve their bargaining position. That makes another escalation a more plausible outcome than a negotiated settlement, despite the growing diplomatic activity.

Per @Liz_Friden The U.S. is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, two U.S. officials confirm to Fox News. The ships will arrive in the Middle East by the end of November, the officials said. These new deployments will add about 10,000 Sailors and Marines to the Middle East.
The USS Roosevelt will be the third aircraft carrier in the Middle East, joining the USS George H.W. Bush which arrived to the region in April, and the USS George Washington which arrived in mid-August to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. This will provide more options for the U.S. as President Trump is reportedly considering ramping up strikes on Iran after the Midterms.
The USS Roosevelt departed its home port of San Diego on Sunday and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed from San Diego on Monday along with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Ready Group typically include about 4,200 Marines and Sailors. The USS Roosevelt carrier strike group includes about 6,000 Sailors.

This is irresponsible amplification of false information attempting to discredit a free and independent press simply for reporting the facts. Our statement replying to @RobertKennedyJr:

ALT “This is irresponsible amplification of false information attempting to discredit a free and independent press simply for reporting the facts. As we stated yesterday, Sheryl has not met Jack Leslie and has not spoken to any member of the NIH hospital board. She and her colleagues on The Times’s team covering HHS produce factual, accurate and responsible journalism that cuts through political rhetoric and provides valuable reporting for the public, all of whom benefit from clear and trustworthy information on public health.” — Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesperson for The New York Times
.@SherylNYT reporting on HHS is a three-legged stool resting on: 1. Anonymous sources, 2. Compromised sources with undisclosed conflicts of interest, and 3. Sinister speculation masquerading as fact—all in service to her unhinged hatred of Donald Trump. #TDS
Note that both the Biden and Trump administrations determined that the UAE-backed RSF militia has committed genocide in Sudan.
You can always count on Netanyahu to say the quiet part out loud. Showing RSF-held territory in Sudan as "friendly" to Israel and UAE definately qualifies as that. middleeasteye.net/news/netan…

Next month, the U.S. could lose the measles elimination status we’ve held since 2000.
The best tool we have is still the MMR vaccine: 2 doses are 97% effective.
If someone you love isn’t vaccinated, don’t ask “Why aren’t you following the guidelines?”
Ask: “What’s getting in the way?”

The conditions that enabled the first Trump-Iran deal have changed. The new conditions suggest no durable US-Iran deal will emerge until Trump’s term ends. This has significant implications for Trump's potential use of a MOAB against Pickaxe Mountain.
In February, the Iranians still believed a deal with Trump was possible. They saw Trump as a president who yearned to be historic - either by striking a deal with Tehran or by becoming the president who got rid of the Islamic Republic. If the latter proved impossible, Trump was still attracted to the idea of a deal.
Tehran no longer holds this view. Instead, Trump is seen as an inherently unstable and immature person who may want a deal, but does not have the discipline to secure one or the strength to keep it in the face of attacks from Israel and pro-Israeli forces in the US.
Moreover, the Iranian narrative suggests that Trump did not hurt enough before agreeing to the MOU. Had the war been more costly, he would have had stronger incentives to keep the agreement.
Combined with the idea that he cannot keep a deal, this results in an Iranian perception that the war can only end once the cost of continuing it becomes intolerable for Trump.
That is, incentives or face-saving exits won’t end the war; Trump reaching a military dead-end will.
These perceptions profoundly shape the implications of Trump striking Pickaxe Mountain with a MOAB.
Tehran’s likely reaction will be to expand the war significantly. Iran’s experience with Trump is that he backs off only if Tehran inflicts high costs on his strategy.
A proportional Iranian response to an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities would be to strike at other nuclear facilities in the region, including in the UAE and Israel. While this would significantly destabilize the region, Tehran believes only such a response would prompt Trump to back off.
