“Not to take anything off winning it — people just don’t remember region championships at South Pittsburg. They do in other places, and it’s fine for them to celebrate them, but for us it’s all about winning another gold ball.” @SPHSPIRATES coach @SPCoachStone after his team wrapped up its eighth straight region title:

TMobile Spirit Challenge 2. “Your Town Your Story” South Pittsburg High School is the centerpiece of our small town. We are the smallest school in our county, but we remain the biggest in tradition and have remained the standard for over a century. We are most well known for 3 things here in South Pittsburg. Lodge Cast Iron, The National Cornbread Festival, and South Pittsburg Pirate football. We have several important traditions that surround our program. One of the those traditions is being the only school in the state regardless of classification to play in a state championship game in every decade of the current playoff system that started in 1969. We have important traditions such as the playing of “Bad Company” for our “Pirate Walk” at home games, the Pirate ship walk over by our players before entering the field, and of course the firing of the cannon on touchdowns. South Pittsburg High School is known by everyone as being the first and original “Dark Mode” school with our iconic all black uniforms. Some of the familiar family names that have been iconic here through the decades are one of the other reasons that make our program special. Our community shuts the town down on Friday nights for Pirate football in the fall. A grand prize win in the T-Mobile FN5GL contest would be beneficial to all of our athletic programs here at South Pittsburg HS as well as for our community. Continue to vote daily and let’s fight until the end!

It’s officially Sale Creek week! The CW and Friday Night Rivals will be at THE PITT this week for this big region showdown between THE CREEK & THE PITT! This is the first TV game in South Pittsburg in over 15 years. Don’t let that stop you from being here. This is the only show in town this week and last regular season home game. No JV game this week. This is your chance to come out on Friday and support the Pirates. #ThePitt #FN5GL #Entry @TMobile @SPCoachStone @jared5_59 @JamoGriffith

Not a peep from the private schools west of Chattanooga when Nashville and Memphis teams claimed 17 consecutive football state titles in DII-AAA, including a nine-year stretch in which the gold ball trophy stayed within a 10-mile radius between Brentwood Academy, Ensworth and MBA.
Did CPA officials write any op-eds about competitive imbalance when the Lions played for 10 championships in 12 years (winning titles in 2 separate classes)? Crickets. CPA's 2024 title team had a roster that included six players ranked among the state's top 100 prospects according to 247Sports, three of which went on to sign with SEC programs. By comparison, in that same season, Baylor had four players in the state's top 100 and McCallie had three. Also, among DII-AAA teams with graduates currently playing in the SEC, the totals are: MBA 5, Lipscomb Academy 5, CPA 4, Ensworth 3, Baylor 2, McCallie 2.
Such numbers do not produce a convincing argument for talent inequity.
Also lost in the pearl clutching is the fact that all TSSAA member schools can now have student-athletes transfer to any team they choose, and even live with host families, a rule which essentially operates the same as boarding programs.
The process of vetting prospective transfers is not as difficult as some schools have made it seem. It simply requires a commitment to ensuring talented out-of-town athletes will be a good fit academically and socially, as well as helping the football program remain an important passage to the admissions office.
That would seem to be an important job for schools that are accustomed to competing for elite enrollees of all walks.
