The Vatican was built on top of a temple to the Ancient Great Mother. This isn't a theory. In 1609, workers digging for the new façade of St. Peter's pulled up altar after altar dedicated to Cybele, the Magna Mater, and her consort Attis. This was the Phrygianum, her sanctuary on Vatican Hill. Here initiates went down into a pit while a bull was slaughtered on a grate above them, and they were drenched in its blood. One altar says the initiate was "reborn for eternity." The altars date from 305 to 390 AD. That means for most of the 4th century, the bull-blood rebirth and Christian baptism were happening side by side on the same hill. Attis dies in late March. On March 25, his followers celebrated his return. Attis's sacred tree was the pine. Today a giant bronze pine cone stands in the Vatican courtyard. The Mother never left the hill. They built over her altar. Coincidence, or continuity?
