Every episode of #Afterlife: 1. Gervais watches videos of his dead wife, resolves to kill himself. 2. He encounters someone with an irritating habit (munching, slurping, etc.), calls them a c***. 1/2 Vis mindre

4. He talks to a woman on a bench, realises life is worth living. 5. He talks to a nurse, realises life is worth living. 6. He talks to a prostitute, realises life is worth living. 7. Episode ends with a montage and uplifting track from the 80s. @rickygervais #AfterLife

Tony’s is complicit in the death of the drug addict. To argue over Tony’s legal or even moral responsibility is beside the point (I’ve seen lots of internet debates on that: “Tony only paid for the drugs. “The addict was responsible for his own actions”). 1/3 #Afterlife

Gervais wrote a premise and refused to engage with it in any kind of authentic way. Gervais’ output, from Extras to stand up, tweets to Golden Globe hosting, is so often self-sabotaged by his narcissism. From the fiction of his shows, to the reality of his TV appearances.

I don’t think you can earnestly believe in both those things at once, and I think it speaks to the conflicting dual needs of Ricky’s ego to feel like he’s this emotionally deep and caring guy, as well as intellectually above everyone around him.
