Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face. These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy. While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.

Dear @katiezacharia — speaking as the world's leading expert on short White House tenures: turn off the news and go enjoy your family. In time you’ll realize that the Universe did you a major favor.

Happy 80th birthday to my friend George W. Bush! Your friendship—and that of your father and your entire family—has been one of the great gifts of my life. It has always reminded me that long before we’re politicians, we’re fellow Americans and, above all, human beings. And for the next month, I’m especially grateful to finally have someone older than me! Wishing you many more years of good health, happiness, and friendship. Our country is stronger when we remember that what unites us is greater than what divides us.

And in this great country we will call it soccer But isn’t it played with the feet, sir? Of course it is. And we will let the clock run for 45 minutes straight, without breaks But what about when they aren’t playing? We will call it Stoppage time. And how much stoppage time will there be? Nobody knows. Will there be a stoppage time clock for viewers to see? Absolutely not. Then how will people know? Only the referees will know

Anybody who makes you earn their love doesn't love you. Love is a gift. It's freely given. You can't transact your way to it the way you can transact your way to a promotion or a good grade. The very thing that makes love love is that it isn't conditional. The moment it becomes conditional, it stops being love and becomes something else. Approval, perhaps. Or maybe usefulness. Worth a great deal, sure, but not love. The people who get this wrong are usually the people who are good at earning things. Strivers. If you've spent your life learning how to earn every reward the world offers, you'll bring that machinery to your most important relationships. You'll work harder. You'll be more useful. You'll perform. You'll people-please. The truth is, people-pleasing is outsourcing your self-worth. You're letting other people decide what you're worth and adjusting until they tell you the answer you want. If they like me, I'm okay. If they don't, I'm not. That's a brutal contract to live under… and the worst part is you signed it yourself. Most people who do this learned it in childhood. Somewhere along the line, they processed the lesson that love is conditional — that affection had to be earned through good grades, good behavior, the right kind of smile. So they kept earning. They became excellent at it, and they never stopped. Stop confusing love with approval. Keep loving the people in your life; just stop trying to win them. Insource your sense of who you are. Receive what's freely given. When somebody requires payment, pay attention.

I've noticed that one of the most common mistakes ambitious people make is believing that happiness is waiting on the other side of achievement. In behavioral science, we call this the arrival fallacy. It's the idea that once you reach the next milestone, get the promotion, earn the recognition, or accomplish the goal, you'll finally feel fulfilled. But satisfaction doesn't come from arriving. It almost always comes from making progress toward something meaningful. That's why goals are important, but they are not the reward. The pursuit is.
